Bookies don’t like Crystal Palace’s Premier League chances after Eagles reach promised land.
The Eagles enjoyed a famous afternoon at Wembley yesterday, but Ian Holloway’s play-off winners are favourites for an immediate return to the Championship.
Crystal Palace may have just won the Championship play-off final, but the task they face in the Premier League has been laid bare by bwin, who have made the Eagles the odds-on favourites for relegation ahead of their fellow newly promoted sides Hull City and Cardiff City.
Ian Holloway’s men beat Watford 1-0 at Wembley yesterday thanks to an extra-time Kevin Phillips penalty, securing a place in the top flight – and a £120 million windfall courtesy of the new TV deal – for the first time in eight years.
But bwin’s bookies don’t think their stay will last for long and go 11/20 that Palace are immediately relegated back to the Championship next season.
Hull City, who won automatic promotion on the last day of the season, are also quoted at odds-on to finish in the bottom three next year: Steve Bruce’s side are 3/5 to last just one year on their return to the top flight.
Cardiff City, preparing for their first top flight campaign for 51 years, are the third favourites for relegation but are quoted at odds-against for the drop. Malkay Mackay’s Championship winners are 13/10 to be relegated, ahead of Norwich City, who are the 5/2 fourth favourites.
Manager-less Stoke City are 3/1 to be demoted, while Southampton and West Ham United, both of whom will be looking to avoid the dreaded ‘second season syndrome’, are 11/2.
Paolo Di Canio’s Sunderland will be hoping to avoid the fate of the last four teams that finished 17th in the Premier League, who were all relegated the following season. The Black Cats are 6/1 to be the fifth, the same price as Aston Villa, while Fulham are 7/1.
You can get 8/1 on both West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City, while Newcastle United are quoted at 12/1 after underachieving last season.
Everton, who are still looking to replace David Moyes as manager, are 28/1 to finish in the bottom three.
Top bet: Crystal Palace to be relegated @ 11/20
