Roberto Martinez resigns as Wigan manager
Roberto Martinez has resigned as manager of Wigan.
The Spaniard led the club to an historic FA Cup triumph this season but could not prevent relegation from the Premier League.
The decision has been announced after 39-year-old Martinez held talks with Wigan chairman Dave Whelan in the past week.
Roberto Martinez factfile
Age: 39
Playing career: Real Zaragoza (1993-94), Balaguer (94-95), Wigan Athletic (95-2001), Motherwell (01-02), Walsall (02-03), Swansea (03-06), Chester City (06-07).
Playing honours: Copa del Rey (1994), Football League Third Division (1997), Football League Trophy (1999 & 2006)
Managerial career: Swansea (2007-09) and Wigan Athletic (2009-13).
Managerial honours: Football League One (2008) & FA Cup (2013).
Martinez, who joined Wigan in June 2009, is one of the leading contenders to take over at Everton.
"He wanted permission to move so I've given that," said Whelan.
"He has 12 months left on his contract, so whoever comes in for him must pay the remainder of his contract.
"He feels he's not the man to lead us back into the Premier League. I've got to accept what he feels.
"He loves Wigan and the fans. We have to move on now and want applications for the job."
More to follow.

You cannot blame the bloke. He has stayed with them over previous seasons and he has turned down the opportunity of going to bigger clubs. Although Wigan have been relegated he took them to an FA Cup win.
Probably a good time for both parties to go their own way and start afresh.

Maybe he's going to the jacks as it seems Laudrup is off elsewhere?

There is more chance of Malky sloping off than Laudrup leaving us

Fair play to Dave Wheelan i say.....letting Martinez resign means Everton wont have to pay Compo.
