Sheffield Wednesday: McPhail on Owls radar

Stephen McPhail is believerd to be interesting Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday could be set to make a summer move for Cardiff midfield player Stephen McPhail.

He interested the Owls in January and is leaving the Bluebirds under freedom of contract.

The 33-year-old is believed to be on the radar of Wednesday manager Dave Jones. McPhail played for five Championship seasons under Jones at Cardiff between 2006 and 2011.

A Republic of Ireland international, he did not figure at all in Malky Mackay’s title-winning league side this season, and his only outings were in two Cup-ties plus development-squad games.

But Jones values experienced players who can still be an asset even if they have had injury problems or been out of the picture at their previous clubs.

He took something of a gamble on Chris Kirkland and Anthony Gardner last year and it paid off.

McPhail, known as a creative midfield player, has made more than 400 senior appearances in a career that has encompassed Leeds, Forest and Millwall.

He spent two years at Barnsley and helped them to win promotion to the Championship in 2006, before leaving for Cardiff.

McPhail is taking coaching badges but believes that he can play for at least two more seasons.

He has said: “I have no thoughts on who I will be playing for yet.

“I have loved playing for Cardiff and enjoyed being even a small part of the club’s title triumph this season.

“I want to play on for a couple of seasons at least. I am fit and ready and, for the first time in six or eight months, I am back to where I was three years ago.Getting back to first-team football is important to me.

“My fitness levels are good and I’ve played 20-odd development games,”

No offence to McPhail but if Sheffield Wednesday want to progress then they need better than an aging McPhail. If Dave Jones makes those sort of signings then the Owls will be in another relegation battle.

Ironically, this is such a DJ signing though isn't it.

I hope McPhail goes there, considering his disappointment this season, SWFC would be a great club to join. :ayatollah:

I sincerely hope Steve gets fixed up with a tidy team at Championship level. I always liked him and what he brought (often unsung) to the team and I genuinely believe the McPhail/Whittingham partnership was one of the best in recent years :ayatollah:

Good luck Steve wherever you go. A Cardiff City stalwart :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Good luck to him, I would take the chance if it means playing in a league out of his depth.

Would be a good move, i just hope steve stays fit and gets regular football, he deserves it
DJ basically doesnt have a budget so it seems hes going for the "experienced but slightly over the hill" signings

All the best to him. He's put in some cracking performances for us and really knows how to control the game. Squad player at Wednesday would be a great move for him.
