MALKY URGES PATIENCE OVER SIGNINGS

Mon May 27, 2013 8:05 am

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has urged patience from Bluesbirds supporters as he goes about building a side for the Premier League.

After the euphoria of the Bluebirds’ Championship- winning campaign, the reality of preparing for life in the Premier League has dawned as Mackay and his staff go about recruiting new players.

The Bluebirds have already been linked to a host of names, but Mackay insists things are very much at an early stage.

Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis is one player said to be interesting the Bluebirds, but the competition Mackay might face for the French international, with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal reportedly interested in the 27-year-old, make any potential deal problematic.

Links with former Swansea City striker Danny Graham, now at Sunderland, appear wide of the mark despite Mackay working with Graham at Watford.

So far only two deals look likely and they are perhaps not totally unexpected ones.

Defender Kevin McNaughton, who is out of contract, has been offered a new two-year deal, but has yet to put pen to paper.

Mackay is also interested in re-signing Leon Barnett after his very successful loan spell at the end of the last campaign.

Barnett made eight appearances and helped Cardiff keep five clean sheets as they secured promotion from the Championship and then the title.

Centre-half Barnett has a year remaining on his contract at Norwich and it would seem likely that he would be attracted to the notion of Cardiff offering him a Premier League lifeline.

But Mackay himself said it might be a case of playing the waiting game when it came to getting the players he wants.

“The fact is some deals are going to happen quickly and then others are going to take a while to happen,” said Mackay. “It really is all about individual cases.

“I would love every player in to do pre-season with me, go away with me and be here for the start of the season – but invariably they are not.

“There is going to need to be a bit of patience, but I think our supporters already know that when they look at the way we’ve gone about our signings over the last two seasons.

“This season will not be any different.

“It will be about identifying our targets and we are working hard to do that now.

“If we can get those then that’s great, but we must have others on our radar so we can then try to push on and get those.

“I would like everyone in tomorrow, but that is never going to happen.”

The line-up for next season’s 20-atrong Premier League will be completed today when Crystal Palace take on Watford in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

After suffering heartbreak in the extended season in recent times, the Bluebirds will be heartened not to have had to rely on the play-offs this time.

Indeed, Cardiff knew they were promoted to the top flight way back on April 16, the night they drew with Charlton at the Cardiff City Stadium.

That has given Mackay and his staff a head start when it comes to formulating their plans for this summer.

“The only thing by knowing earlier that we were promoted meant really was that we knew quickly what our budgets were for next season,” said Mackay.

“Things suddenly changed.

“We knew we had a Premier League budget and we could get started with some work.

“As far as players coming in is concerned, it’s just the same track really as last year or the year before.”

It was the same last season. We were waiting ages for the players to come in but slowly and surely they did. It takes time to fully judge a quality signing. I am in no rush to await news of a new signing provided we sign the right players. :ayatollah:

This is our 3rd summer transfer window with MM, and if this one is like the last two, we will know nothing until its announced by the club.
Out of all the players we have signed it was only Bellamy we knew about before it happened,MM :malky: keeps his cards close to his chest, and I think that's the best way.
Anyway we all like surprises. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

In the main, you are somewhat correct but I would like to point out that the signings of Miller, Gunnarsson, Mason, Bellamy, Noone, Maynard, Kimbo were highlighted on here before they signed :ayatollah:

Shocking. Malky out. Neymar has just signed for Barcelona making Messi surplus to requirements and we've still not signed him. Tamping is putting it lightly.

If Watford win today I would like Jonathan Williams, Wilbrahim and Bolasie from Crystal Palace.

If Palace win then Vydra has to be the choice from Watford

Wilbrahim is a strange one in my opinion as he is 34 in October and has only started 2 Premier League games with a further 9 sub appearances scoring 1 goal in his entire career.

Surely we will be looking to better than players like him.

What is this urge to sign Williams? He won't be signing for us, he'll be signing for a top club provided he goes anywhere at all.
