Sun May 26, 2013 10:53 pm

Thats what Northampton saints hooker Dylan Hartley got for the sending off yesterday, ruling him out of the Lions tour, yet footballers do it all the time with hardley a card shown!

Is that a fact you know Footballers say that?

Good. That is terrible sportsmanship. The referee's should be given stun guns to restrain these animals.

Hartley has had question marks over his discipline and conduct for years. He wasn't available for the last Lions tour cos he was banned. He was warned by the ref over his backchat and language a few minutes before and still couldn't help himself. Good enough for him, glad he's missing the Lions your. His replacement Rory Best should have been selected before him anyway.

Things are said in the heat of the moment. An 11 game domestic would have been understandable given the unwritten rule all players in rugby have regarding respect for the ref but to see the ban impact on his Lions tour as well does seem very harsh.

It's not an unwritten rule though, it's in the laws of the game that abuse of a match official is i think a minimum 6 week ban. Given Hartley was warned 2 minutes before and his history of ill-discipline i think 11 weeks is about right.
Fair play 2 Wayne Barnes for having the balls to go through with it and send him off. The FA should take a leaf out of his book with regards to their 'Respect' campaign. How many times do you lip read on Sky sports footballers swearing at officials and how often do you seem them get booked? A zero tolerance towards it and a few red cards would soon see it stamped out of the game.

He still has a glimmer of hope with his appeal, if he wins or gets the ban reduced enough then he could still be on that plain to play the convicts. I'm with the previous poster though. Rory best should have been picked in the first place.

As said here the ref said to him minutes before do not talk to me like that you are only staying on because I'm not certain that it was aimed at me then he did it again. I am glad to see him banned as i don't think he is good enough for the lions.

Hartley's main problem has been his inability to control himself. His career is littered with bans and fines for ill discipline.
Even though I'd have liked to see a few local Saints players going to Oz, Rory Best and Richard Hibbard are better players anyway.
Perhaps the FA should introduce the open mic for football referees as they do in rugby.
As the Nigel Owens clip demonstrated, it would be interesting to see Man Utd or Chelsea's players surrounding Nigel.
The sin bin for 10 minutes could be adopted quite easily.
A player who commits an offence but not bad enough to be booked (like diving or feigning injury) could leave the field for 10.

Fair enough, mate. I'm not the biggest rugby fan in the world (football and motor racing for me) so I yield to your greater knowledge and understanding

Raises the question if he didn't really WANT to go on tour if this is the second time he's missed out for similar, eh? :ayatollah:

Think he's just a complete hothead who can't control his temper or mouth in this case! quite surprised he was selected in the first place to be honest, maybe Gatland wanted him to wind the Aussie's up and get under their skin

Referees need to man up and stop acting like victims all the time. It's boring now.

Gatland probably also seen him as being a good option on the hard pitches over there, and the running game. Unlike new zealand or south africa. Where a strong pack would have been very important to front up, australia don't rely to heavily on their pack, and tend to play a more loose open game away from the forwards. They like to make the opposition cover a lot of yards with a lose kicking type game. So it may have suited hartley slightly better.

Discapline and Ref power is far more superior in Rugby than Football.. Even the Citing system they use....

Football needs to catch up...
