Insurance for 17 Year Old

Thu May 16, 2013 8:04 pm

Looking for some advise on best car insurance companies for my 17 year old son.

Looking to get him a Clio but the insurance is well over 2 grand, just be some cheaper companies out there.

I found that multi car insurance was the best deal I could get for my 18 yet old son.He is the named driver with 12 months full licence & he drives a Peugeot 1.9 diesel fully comp for £1200.He is not a named driver on mine or he wife's but we are on his hope this helps by the way we are with Admiral

its a nightmare even if he is a named driver on your policy its still ridiculous you just have to get lucky, i would try find a car with a low insurance group and once you use a comparison site still go on individual websites because compare site are usually owned by company's and are biased apparently. insurance for young kids is so overpriced they think they will all be out joyriding! i would also recommend one of those boxes being fitted that monitor your sons speed and stuff like that and if he is a careful driver it will go cheaper but they don't allow you out after 11 (well they do but your overall score goes down) but they are definitely worth a look so he is at least driving :ayatollah:

Direct line offer no claims bonus for named drivers so although the first year will be steep, if he stays claim free it will be reflected in the following years premiums.

Buy a diesel
A undesirable car to thieves ( mondeo or another family style car rather than a corsa etc )
Put a women on the policy as named driver
Low annual mileage

1st central are pretty good for young drivers as are Tesco

Dont get a clio or something that is regularly involved in crashes. It increases the risk factor and the premium will be high. They see clio, a young driver and think hes going to be speeding around the city centre in it. Get him a family car. He'll probably need the space soon when he knocks up a few birds from dogging.

That`s about the same as my son paid when he past his test, same circumstances too, me named on his policy, and with Admiral too.

Phone Admiral and get a quote on a Multicar policy as already mentioned. You will save money on his policy and also get a discount for every car brought over.

In addition, have you put yourself down as the second driver as this can help reduce the cost ?

I used to work for Admiral and to be honest 2k for a 17 year old male is the average cost.

I'm 18 years old and I have been quoted £2,000 for most cars that have between a 1.0 litre and 1.4 litre and actually £1,500 for a 1.2 Clio. Best bet would be to go on comparethemarket.com and look through all the quotes and research the company.

Also bit of advice unless you want to be popping back and forth to the garage all the time don't touch any car that has gone over 80,000 miles without the timing belt being changed. Also Clio's have a habit of being troublesome. If you want a good little runner I would get him a German car like a Volkswagen or Vauxhall or something that is Japanese like a Hyundai.

Good luck!

hi if he/she is learning collingwood give a good deal and when they pass test co=op good price if you add a tracker which they install free (good for safety when first driving) also drive well and you get discount on your insurance every 3 months my boy is with co-op just had £20 a month off for safe driving no good for boy racers

Just get him insured on a Renault Espace or a Volvo estate. He'll be too embarrassed to drive it and therefore will spend less time on the road which in turn will reduce the likelihood of him putting it in a hedge and ensure he builds up a no claims bonus to reduce his future premiums.

Happy to help.

Don't get a Clio. Don't be attracted by buying a cheap banger either - makes no difference as a banger causes as much damage (actually more as the driver takes less care than if it was worth a lot) to another car as a non banger.

Get a group one car like an Aygo. Still not cheap though.

AND it goes UP when they PASS their driving test.

It's a rip off for the majority of safe driving kids. They are just paying for the minority who drive reckless and rack up the damage bills.

Make sure he does the pass plus course. His instructor may be qualified or know an instructor who does the course. It's about 6 hours extra tuition and will reduce your sons premiums.
