' David Beckham retires from football '

Thu May 16, 2013 2:12 pm

Former England captain David Beckham is to retire at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old signed a five-month deal at Paris St-Germain in January and donated all of his salary to charity.
Beckham joined Manchester United as a 14-year-old and made 398 appearances, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
He moved to Real Madrid in 2003, winning the La Liga title in 2007 before a switch to the United States with LA Galaxy.
The midfielder made his England debut against Moldova in 1996 and captained the side from 2000 to 2006, making his 115th and final England appearance in a 3-0 win over Belarus in 2009.

What your opinions on old 'Golden Balls'

Sadly I think his celebrity status has detracted from what an outstanding footballer he was. You can debate calling the likes of Rooney 'world class' but I don't think you can with Beckham. Nobody could deliver it into the box like he could and to boot he also had a world class free kick and a world class work ethic.

Incredible player. I doubt we'll ever see anyone who can deliver crosses like Beckham.

Great guy as well, would be a great coach for young kids. Need a coach Malky?

He "retired" from football the day he choose the glitz and glamour of LA instead of staying in the top european leagues.

He won the league with Madrid.

Also, sent packing by Man U for non footballing reasons.

It shows that his name is bigger than his football talent that this thread is a sticky. In fact why is there a thread at all? He never played for us, against us, in the same league as us, nor is he Welsh. Heider Helguson has said he'll retire but no thread on that. No doubt Beckham will make the news tonight and headlines in tomorrows papers. Maybe I'm jealous of his celebrity, I dont know, but it goes to show that the British media make people celebrities regardless of their talent. I'm not saying he's not a talented player but his celebrity status is far more than his football talent deserves.

He has acheived far more in the game than Heidur Helguson and this messageboard isnt restricted to Cardiff City, although when Heidur accounced his retirement there was a sticky on it so your point is redundant.

In todays world of non celebrity I would say the complete opposite and say he is one of the few "celebrities" with actual talent.

World class footballer with celebrity status or some slag who gets her tits out on some z list reality tv show.

Hmmmmmm.

A great footballer on and off the field. Wasn't a cock like some today.

After United and Madrid, I reckon he was only bought for shirt sales more than his ability.
