Top 5 Worst Premier League Signings 2012-13 Season

Wed May 15, 2013 4:38 pm

All transfer deals involve a degree of calculated risk. Form may disappear as quickly as flaws in character may emerge. Injury is an occupational hazard. But some signings are so rash, so illogical, that they are accidents waiting to happen.
When the fallout starts, everyone runs for cover. The club institutes radio silence. The player’s agent hits the speed dial on his mobile to cut another deal for his over-indulged client. A call to the manager tends to go to voicemail.
Here, in reverse order, are my five worst signings of the Premier League season.
Park Ji-Sung (QPR)
Rangers’ season has been so calamitous, we could have chosen all five of our candidates from the bloated, fractious squad that has taken them into the Championship. Of all the failures, Park is perhaps the most puzzling. He’s the Duracell Bunny whose battery has spluttered and died.
Watching his palsied performances, it has been impossible to imagine that the former Manchester United midfielder has four Premier League titles and a Champions League win on his CV. He has run out of ideas, energy and credibility.
Marouane Chamakh (Arsenal)
Do you remember him leaving Arsenal to join West Ham on loan in January? Me neither. Such collective amnesia is understandable given his complete lack of impact at Upton Park, where he has lumbered around for 151 minutes in three truncated appearances.
Fourth choice for the single striker’s role favoured by Sam Allardyce, the Morocco international doesn’t appear to have been unduly concerned by his marginalisation. He has scored a single Premier League goal in two years, a record that puts him on a par with Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard.
Marko Marin (Chelsea)
The Invisible Man of Stamford Bridge should disappear into the sunset once Chelsea reveal the identity of their next manager. Though Marin is under contract until 2017, it is unlikely the new man (who might be an old favourite) will waste much time on a winger who has made only two Premier League starts since his £7m move from Werder Bremen.
His agent insists other clubs are interested, and it doesn’t take much to read between the lines; that a return to the achingly fashionable Bundesliga might be the best solution for all parties. He needs regular competition to make Germany’s 2014 World Cup squad.
Maicon (Manchester City)
That taxi, which ferried him away from White Hart Lane after his humiliation by Gareth Bale, should head up the M6 as fast as legally possible. It is safe to say there won’t be too many tears shed if the Brazilian full-back jumps in and heads to the airport.
He insists he wants to stay, but the loss of his benefactor, Roberto Mancini, means the decision will probably be out of his hands. The excellence of Pablo Zabaleta and inconsistent fitness have ensured he has made only 11 appearances since joining from Inter Milan in August. Time and patience have run out.
José Bosingwa (QPR)
Harry Redknapp substituted him for his own good on Sunday. A shame, that. Bosingwa (pictured) should have been left on to feel the wrath of QPR supporters who are rightly outraged that he has two years left on a £65,000-a-week contract.
His lack of professionalism has been offensive, even if the dim-wittedness of some of his mistakes has been laughable. No one likes him – the fans left nothing to the imagination when they chanted “we don’t want you here” – and he doesn’t appear to care. The saddest aspect of his indolence is that he can’t lose, financially.
