POSITIVE STEPS ON NEW TRAINING FACILITY

Cardiff City Football Club are pleased to confirm that positive discussions have taken place with the Vale of Glamorgan Council concerning the provision of land on a long term lease at Hensol.

The agreement on the circa 40 acre site will allow the club to begin works on the state of the art Vale of Glamorgan Training Facility and pitches, providing a long term base of operations for the Cardiff City professionals and senior Academy squads.

Subject to Cabinet and planning application approval, it is hoped that work on the first phase will begin in coming months, starting with the development of five training pitches and associated development, goalkeeping and rehabilitation areas. The first phase pitches will be developed by Hewitt SportsTurf, followed by the training complex, which includes state of the art sports science and rehabilitation areas.

Cardiff City Football Club Manager Malky Mackay today said, “The Vale of Glamorgan Training Facility will without a shadow of a doubt become the cornerstone of this Football Club for many years to come, the magnificent site at Hensol enabling us to develop an international standard facility for our senior squad and Academy. I am once again indebted to our owner, Tan Sri Vincent Tan for his vision and backing and believe that this project is something that all connected to Cardiff City Football Club can celebrate. I would also like to thank all at the Vale of Glamorgan Council for their assistance in driving this club forward.”

Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Neil Moore, said: “Cardiff City’s promotion to the Premier League was fantastic news and the club’s aim to develop a state-of-the-art training facility in the Vale of Glamorgan looks to be a positive move for the Vale and the club.

“We have had very positive discussions with the club’s management and I’m pleased to say we will be considering the proposals for the training facility at our Cabinet meeting on Monday 20 May. It goes without saying we are very keen to welcome Cardiff City Football Club to the Vale of Glamorgan.”

Cardiff City Football Club Chief Executive and Acting Chairman Simon Lim said, “We are extremely grateful to Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Neil Moore and all at the Vale of Glamorgan Council for their support in what will be a landmark project in South Wales. Alongside the excellent facilities already in place at the Vale of Glamorgan Resort, this new development gives the Football Club a solid platform to build on, including first class pathways for our Academy youngsters. The new training facility, funded by Tan Sri Vincent Tan is excellent news for all supporters, as the new site will attract players for many years to come, further enhancing the progress of the club.”

Cardiff City Football Club Stadium Manager Wayne Nash added, “Hewitt SportsTurf are the preferred contractor for the design and build of our pitches at Hensol and we are delighted to take on such an internationally renowned sports-ground contractor as a major partner for this project. Hewitt’s track record, including projects such as the Emirates Stadium, Tottenham Hotspur’s new training ground, our own stadium pitch and facilities at Olympic Park speaks for itself.”

Just waiting for the usual suspects to say "I'll believe it when I see it".

Regardless, its another positive step for our football club, onwards and upwards!

is this going on the vale then or a separate site at hensol? just seems a bit odd as im sure the main reason he was looking to build his own was to move it to cardiff area?

No, they want to build their own training ground to save paying to use someone else's. Buisness sense to own rather than rent

good location - 5 mins drive from J34 of the M4, which is only 10-15 mins from the stadium itself; but out of the way location which the players and staff are already familiar with. Sure the decision was based on commercial realities but still nice to see some continuity.

There is a lot of land out at Hensol - those of us of a certain age will recall it was used as a mental institute before 'care in the community' closed it down. My mate's Dad worked there doing the maintenance, and my mate worked there in the summer hols, he had some tales - I remember playing cricket there once, I was fielding when I suddenly realised there was an inmate standing right next to me copying everything I was doing

One inmate there used to set the fire alarm off so he could time the boys coming from Cowbridge station - used to give them a running commentary on how well they were doing, their PB etc - that fire enging coming down those lanes at full pelt through the Forestry commission up the back of the estate, scary!

For fellow egg lovers, Jenks lives up there the other side of the gold club.
