who thinks swansea will get knocked before europa league

Sun May 12, 2013 11:20 am

2 europa qualifying rounds for the jacks,
they will most likely draw a seedy romanian side in the first round and then in the second round play a respectable side like schalke or braga ,michu has an off day or injured and they get anhilated  :malky:

no, I want Swansea to qualify for Europa league. think they will struggle in the league then, might be our only chance of finishing above them

You have no chance of finishing above the Swans next season

On current form (although I will accept you 'rolled over' for Sir Alex today ;) ) I think it best you say feck all and just be glad the season is over

Put simply, your squad cannot take a season like this one again and (as good as he is) your Chairman cannot keep you afloat to the level required for more than one competition. On top of that your 'style' has been well sussed now and Laudrup will be wishing he had gone to Everton come this time next season

Not 'stirring' mate. Just stating facts ;) :ayatollah:

Gary, am I right in thinking you have to play 2 qualifying rounds because Wigan won the FA Cup yesterday, had Man City won you would have played just 1 qualifying round ?

Re: who thinks swansea will get knocked before europa league

Forget who they are but what they are, a mid table premier league team.

The first two rounds will be the equivalent of playing 4 friendlies against Welsh league teams.......Mere pre season stuff.

That is correct.

Those two games will replace two friendlies we'd have had at the same time, so there are some positives to it in the sense that we'll have some competitive match practice going in to the start of the season.

To be honest, I don't have a clue how the seeding works. I've tried researching it, but have found nothing and the best indication of the standard of teams will face are just looking at who teams qualifying at the same stage as us have had in the Europa League era.

2012/13 - Liverpool

3rd round, FC Gomel (4-0)
4th round, Hearts (2-1)

2011/12 - Stoke City

3rd round, Hadjuk Split (2-0)
4th round, Thun (5-1)

2010/11 - Liverpool

3rd round, Rabotnicki (4-0)
4th round, Trabzonspor (3-1)

2009/10 - Fulham

3rd round, Vetra (6-0)
4th round, Amkar Perm (3-2)

There's no sides of the standard above that I wouldn't back us to beat over two legs, and all previous teams have progressed to the group stages. The real European adventure for us would start in the group stages, where it will be much easier to go to away games (especially to places where you need a visa) given some decent notice. If we were to get the away leg first in the third qualifying round we'd have less than two weeks notice to organise away travel between the draw date and the match.

I hope they do well in it, it will f**k the league up for them. playing on a Thursday, then again on a Sunday is hard and the travelling will take it's toll. Fingers crossed we get them twice on Sundays after tough Europa games, and beat them twice, and they get relegated :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :malky:

I think they will do well in the competition! Especially with laudrup at the helm. Their style of play will suit European competition imo

What an outstanding example of envy this thread is. :thumbright:

Personally I don't care if we fail to get past the qualifiers. I'ts a lot to ask of a club that lives within its means, and still manages to finish ninth in the PL, to go that bit further and play another dozen or more games in Europe.

Having said that, I wasn't that keen to get to the PL, but I've loved it.

My point exactly. Ninth is a 'one-off' and you should be proud. Look at what happened the last time you finished in the top half (under Toshack) ;) :ayatollah:

As for (quote) "didn't want to be in the Premiership" I feel you meant to say "Didn't EXPECT to get to the Premiership" which is the difference between your small, coastal town club and our CAPITAL CITY club ;) :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

It isn't a one off though is it, they had a similar amount of points and a similar finish last year too.

The factor of the additional games that the Europa League really is being over stated.

Laudrup has shown that he can achieve success in the UEFA Cup whilst also doing well in the league and cup competitions:

2002-2003, Brondby - 2nd, Danish Cup Winners, Danish Super Cup winners, UEFA Cup 1st round
2003-2004, Brondby - 2nd, Danish Cup Semi Finals, UEFA Cup 3rd round
2004-2005, Brondby - 1st, Danish Cup Winners, UEFA Cup 2nd round, Royal League Group Stages
2005-2006, Brondby - 2nd, Danish Cup Semi Finals. Danish League Cup Winners, UEFA Cup Group Stages, Royal League Group Stages
2007-2008, Getafe - 14th, Copa Del Ray Final, UEFA Cup Q/F's (greatest season in their history)

We also don't have to come in until the third round of the League Cup and are unlikely to play anywhere near the 8 games we played in the League Cup last season so in reality we're talking about something like 5-10 additional mid week fixtures over the course of the season from a squad that has a large contingent of players who've played in the football league and are used to play Saturday - Tuesday - Saturday.

We must have had a one off for the last nine seasons then? we've improved in every one of our previous six, something I'm unsure that any other club can claim to have done and finished 11th last season.
