Honest answer/opinions

Thu May 09, 2013 7:59 am

Now I read a lot on here that everyone was around during the dark days when we were fighting relegation battles in the lower leagues, But if that were the case we would of had 10,000 - 15,000 through the gate every home game.

Now I wasn't their during the dark days every game but I went as much as my father would take me (which wasn't very often). As soon as I left high school and started working I have had a season ticket which will be 9 years next season.

Now the question I want to ask is;

How many of you would still be a season ticket holder if we dropped down the leagues and ended up fighting relegation battles in league 2???

I would say all of us on here minus a few due to the rebrand.

Not sure why you think we should have had 10K to 15K going on what you read here. Message boards are a very small percentage of support but are usually the die hards of the club. I'm not sure what our crowds would be if we dropped a few leagues but I would say most of us on here will be there.

We probably did have a core support of 10-15k in the lower leagues who attended some games during a season on a casual basis. The problem is when those posters mention "being there in the dark days" they forget to add "only for a couple of games per season" and thus give the perception they are talking from a season ticket holders viewpoint which then gives the impression that we had thousands of ST holders.

In your OP you ask for "Honest Answers" to whether I and others would purchase a ST if we slipped down the leagues.

If we ever went the same way as Portsmouth or Wolves I would still renew as it gives me something to do on a Saturday or any other day we play on.

However, if we stay in the Premiership and a season ticket rose from its present price of £329 (price freeze) to say £599 for the same seat, then I would have to think very hard about whether it was worth it.

So actually staying in the Premiership is the more likely reason for me to give up my ST than relegation.

Personally, as I live 200 miles away, I can honestly say that I would not carry on being a season ticket holder at league 2 level! However, I would still get to the odd home game and definately half the away games :ayatollah:

How many would renew their season tickets if we did a wolves over next two seasons? Ave crowd when we were in div1 was 11 k that would be all we would get, problem is our "new supporters" won't be there if we ever return to the dark old days. Once a supporter always a supporter should be the motto. Cardiff is for life not just Christmas.

That happens at nearly every football club that are relegated. Only Manchester City in recent years have bucked that trend.

I am confident that if we get relegated next season we would still get a 80% renewal rate on season tickets. If we then went down again to League 1 then I still believe we would sell in excess of 10k season tickets.

I think this is a really good post,

everyone says they were their during the dark days but forgets to mention that they were only there for a few games a season.

And the price is a good one because my uncle took me to my first ever city game back in Division 3 and he used to enjoy going, after we got promoted in the millennium stadium he stopped due to the price. He comes with me now and then when I have a spare ticket

I think if the prices for renewal were the same a lot of people wouldn't bother but that's where the club cash in. ST usually go on sale Jan-Feb time because you don't know where the club are going to be the next season

I can honestly say that during the 'dark' days I very rarely missed a home game, what with the echo vouchers to get in for £5 etc, but as I've got older and my dad stopped paying for me around 1999/2000 season I started going less and less due to the cost involved and work commitments etc.

During the first season or 2 in the championship I lived abroad so probably only went to a max of 3 games a season when I was home, one of which was that shocker against Charlton (think we lost 3-0 at home on a Tuesday?), but since moving home in Nov 2007 I have been down as often as finances and work allowed.

Luckily now I have a job which allows me to attend most home games and for the last 3 years I've been a season ticket holder although, I cant go to every game, so if we went down and done a Pompey/Wolves, I would still renew as for me the Premier League is not the be all and end all of my support for the City. My boy has got the bug now as well and I was looking forward to taking him to a few games next season but with us going up, I can imagine this proving quite difficult to get him a ticket.
