Laudrup to replace David Moyes?

Thu May 09, 2013 7:39 am

Taking the Michael? Everton put Swansea's Laudrup at top of list to replace David Moyes.

Celtic's Lennon, Martinez of Wigan and Porto's Pereira also in the frame as Toffees manager looks set to succeed Fergie at Manchester United.

Everton have already drawn up a short list of potential successors for departing manager David Moyes.

And Swansea boss Michael Laudrup tops the candidates the club have been carefully considering because Moyes has refused to commit himself to a new long-term contract.

Despite some residual anger at the way Manchester United made the approach to their still-under-contract manager on Wednesday, Moyes will leave with the blessing of chairman Bill Kenwright, who has had a close relationship with the Scot for the past 11 years.

The pair met in London on Wednesday, with Moyes explaining that while his heart still lies at Goodison and he regards the people there as family, his head tells him he simply can’t turn down the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity created by Alex Ferguson's Old Trafford retirement.

The Toffees' boss was waiting until the end of the campaign to consider his options - he will be a free agent in July, so United will not have to pay any compensation.

Given the quality of their manager, Everton were always aware of the potential need to find a replacement, and they have drawn up a strong short-list that also includes the likes of Wigan boss Roberto Martinez, Celtic’s Neil Lennon and also - intriguingly - highly regarded Porto coach Vitor Pereira.

Laudrup though, would be the obvious choice after proving himself so spectacularly this season with the Swans, by steering them to their first ever major trophy and Premier League security while playing exciting, attractive football.

The Dane has also shown he is adept in the transfer market because of his extensive knowledge of European football, which would fit perfectly with the policy of finding cut-price gems so successfully pursued at Goodison by Moyes.

Everton will take their time though, and allow themselves the luxury of considering all options.

Because of the fresh tranche of TV money due this summer, they do not have to sell any players, and will refuse to let all but midfielder Marouane Fellaini leave.

Fellaini has a £23million clause in his contract allowing him to go, with Chelsea the likely destination... though Old Trafford may now be on the radar, too.

Everton’s luxury of time would also allow them to consider the claims of their current skipper Phil Neville - he could be an outside bet to succeed Moyes alongside the guiding hand of a more experienced figure.

Neville though, will also have the option of going back to his former club to fill a coaching role under his manager at Old Trafford.

Moyes is also likely to take his assistant Steve Round and youth development expert Martin Waldron, with the trio’s enviable reputation in developing kids through the system one of the reasons United made the appointment.

It is expected Moyes will be in charge for Sunday's game against West Ham.

If they can stump up the £5m release fee then ill pack his bags for him. We have installed Morton Weighorst as number 2 for a reason...

Good planning looking ahead to Championship and League 1 football... :D

I think it's a distinct possibility. Premier League experience and already working with a club with a limited budget.
Moving to a more high profile club on a significantly higher salary will obviously make the Everton job be an extremely attractive proposition to him.

Doubt he'd leave Swansea for Everton.

Proving a great source of income, prevents second season syndrome and enables bargains to be found. Not the end of the world.

I can never tell with Laudrup. He is the Peter Whittingham of football management, does he care about reputation of the club and salary or about happiness and well being ?

He has brought his family over, Swansea outside the city is a beautiful place, fresh air and waves. Does he want to move to merseyside ?

I am not sure he would move or even take the phone call. Everton are already the best of the also rans, how will he improve them ?

PS

Just smiled when I realised we are in that also ran group now

It's £10 million, and he's not going anywhere. Whilst I'm sure they want him, and whilst yes they are a bigger club, for what Laudrup wants in a club as a football manager then we have the better managerial job for him.

If I was Bill Kenwright it's who i'd go for but you can argue Swansea's spending power is/will be more than Everton

Everton spent £12mil ish this season (selling Rodwell for £12million)

Swansea spent £15 (albeit banking £6 mil too)

Hmm it would not be too much of a step up for Laudrup. I reckon he will stay at SCFC. I think Martinez is a clear favourite there if Wigan go down but wouldn't be surprised to see a left field appointment from abroad or within the club.

It's pretty much accepted that Laudrup will leave next summer with Morten Wieghorst probably taking over.
