Newport County boss Justin Edinburgh is similar in style to Malky Mackay
By Terry Phillips | 5 May 2013

Justin Edinburgh has been likened to Championship-winning Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay... by the man who knows them best, writes Terry Phillips.

David Kerslake, Cardiff’s assistant manager, has worked side by side with Mackay as the Bluebirds delivered the Premier League dream.

But he is also the closest of pals with Edinburgh, the two men forging a friendship since their playing days together in a Spurs team which included Jurgen Klinsmann and Teddy Sheringham.

They were – and this is their own description, not mine – part of a group who called themselves ‘The rubbish six’ in that talented Tottenham team.

“Ossie Ardiles was manager and everybody had to be goal-minded,” recalls Kerslake (pictured below).

“Justin and I were full-backs. If he went forward down his side to put in a cross, Ossie demanded that I was on the run to meet it in the penalty area and vice versa.

“We had the Klinsmann, Sheringham, Popescu, Dimitrescu, Nicky Barmby and more. They were known as the ‘Famous Five’ and the rest of us called ourselves the ‘rubbish six.’

“Great days, great memories. Justin and I have been close since.

“When he was appointed Newport manager Justin came to at my place because he needed to be based in South Wales. We go on holiday together – and we’ll be off to the sun a couple of times this summer.

“We became the best of friends almost from the moment we started playing together at Spurs. That has never changed. Justin has done a terrific job at Newport and I wish him the best at Wembley Stadium tomorrow.

“There are certainly similarities in the way he works and how Malky Mackay does things at Cardiff.

“They are open, honest and won’t stand any nonsense. Everybody knows what their role is and what is expected of them. Each have achieved success this season and have worked for that.

“I would have wanted to be at Wembley and give Justin a little support, but unfortunately that’s not possible because we have our own Cardiff City promotion parade.

“We haven’t been able to get together often because both our clubs have had busy seasons, but I will give him a call before the match against Wrexham.

“Then we’ll relax over the close season and talk about how things have gone.”

Edinburgh, 43, was appointed County manager during 2011, taking over from Anthony Hudson when the team were 23rd in the Blue Square Conference.

They comfortably avoided relegation and built a strong challenge this season.

Edinburgh won FA Cup and League Cup winners medals during a decade playing for Spurs, while he has had successful times as a non-League manager with Rushden and then Newport.

Today he is on the brink of his biggest triumph since turning to management.

Close pal Kerslake, of course, will miss Edinburgh’s big day at Wembley because he will be with Mackay and the Bluebirds on their open top bus tour of Cardiff to celebrate their Championship title triumph.

“I would have wanted to have seen more Newport matches, but I know they are decent up front with the pace and quality of Jolley and O’Connor,” says Kerslake.

“When Just went to Newport they were on their knees and he has worked hard to turn it round.

“They reached the FA Trophy final last season and, despite injuries and a dreadfully packed fixture list in the closing stages of the season, they qualified for the play-offs, beat Grimsby in the semi-finals and are one game away from taking their place in the Football League.

“He has done an amazing job and I’m delighted for him. Just sets high standards, just like Malky.”

He is a manager who kicks every ball when he’s out there on the touchline, just like Malky.

Been down Rodney Parade this season and it seems they have the structures in place (as well as league standard players) and a fantastic and likeable manager in JE. Thoroughly deserve to be where they are and next season can draw decent crowds from a decent sized area.

Could be good for us and them for loaning out our fringe players to get some league footy experience

Some of the oldies won't like this but we need to do a deal with them especially with the management ties.

We should send 2/3 kids there for the season. Nugent comes to mind, a season at that level will toughen him up and Joe Rall would probably be the most talented player in the division.
