A crowd of over 23,000 including, 2,300 Bluebirds witnessed an amazing game of end to end stuff.

Cardiff City ended their season in the blue kit, with many of their fans once again decked out in blue and some in fancy dress.

Amidst incredible scenes on Humberside, Mackay, whose side had already been promoted as champions, expressed his pride in his players.

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay hailed his ‘relentless’ Bluebirds as they ended their historic season with a draw amidst incredible scenes at Hull.

The game finished 2-2 after Fraizer Campbell opened the scoring for the visitors before goals from Nick Proschwitz and Paul McShane put Steve Bruce’s Tigers on the verge of Premier League promotion. But a late penalty from Nicky Maynard, who came on for his first appearance for Cardiff since September after a serious knee injury, put things on a knife-edge.

After the final whistle, Hull had to wait a quarter of an hour until the match between Watford and Leeds had finished to see their promotion confirmed.

Amidst incredible scenes on Humberside, Mackay, whose side had already been promoted as champions, expressed his pride in his players.

“It wasn’t easy to focus with the attention on the game, but I have got a great group of professionals,” said Mackay.

“The season is about going out and playing 46 games and seeing where the land lies after that. I thought you saw that here where right until the end, both teams were trying to beat each other. That’s the way it should work.

“I’m delighted we are leaving this league with the most clean-sheets and wins. I’m so proud of my players for being relentless in the way they have performed every week because this is a tough, tough division. It is so tight, but I’m proud because we didn’t limp over the line.

“There was no way we wanted to lose and I don’t think we deserved to.

“I had three forwards on at the end, but I don’t think Hull were expecting any favours from me. They certainly never got any.

“It was strange. A sending off, two penalties and a pitch invasion all in the space of five minutes is certainly something I have never experienced before. But this is Hull’s day so congratulations to Steve Bruce and his team.”

And Mackay praised his striker Maynard who has battled back after surgery, adding: “As soon as I signed Nicky, I knew I’d signed a top player. He tore his cruciate ligament and this was his first game back in professional football and I’m delighted for him. To come in and be calm and cool to stick the penalty away shows what kind of player he is.”

Meanwhile Steve Bruce was left delighted and bemotionally exhausted after his Hull side joined their visitors in the Premier League.

Bruce said: “I’ve been in the game a ,long, long time, but I have never witnessed anything quite like that. It was just ridiculous. Incredible really. It shows how difficult this league is to get out of. My players showed what huge desire they have and what a great bunch they are.”

I was pleasantly surprised to see us play in blue today when we could have played in all red. It has been clear in recent weeks that our core support do not want our traditions to disappear.I hope the club use and properly promote our blue shirt next season. If red has to be our home colour to appeal to our Asian friends for the time being then we should always be blue when we are away from home.

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay:

"There's no way I wanted to lose the game today and I don't think we deserved to lose the game.

"I thought the Brentford thing was crazy last week but a sending-off, two penalties and a pitch invasion in the space of five minutes is certainly something I've never experienced before.

"Thankfully we got the goal back which I think we thoroughly deserved.

"We got off the pitch and allowed Hull to have their day because this is Hull's day. We got a point and got out of here but congratulations to Steve Bruce and Hull."
