Joint leading scorer will not be involved in Bluebirds' season-ending fixture and, with his contract up, has headed home to Iceland
Heidar Helguson has left Cardiff and returned to Iceland
Heidar Helguson, Cardiff City's joint leading scorer, has returned home to Iceland and will not be involved in their match at Hull City on Saturday.
Icelandic international Helguson, 35, netted eight goals for the Bluebirds, but is out of contract with Cardiff.
After 15 years playing, Helguson may have one final season playing for his boyhood club Throttur Reykjavic.
"I couldn't have wished for a better ending, than to gain promotion," he said. "The season went great I think."
He has recovered from a calf strain and would be fit for the match at Hull, but with Rudy Gestede, Joe Mason, Fraizer Campbell and Nicky Maynard available he has been given the go-ahead ton join his family in Iceland.
"There is no reason for me to play. Just let Aron (Gunnarsson) and the boys take care of it."
Helguson started his professional career in Norway at the age of 22 and has spent the last 14 years in Britain.
"I have to admit that I have lasted longer playing abroad than I thought I would," he said.
"It's important if you want to achieve something, especially when you are over 30, to think very carefully how you want to live your life."
Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay paid tribute to the Icelander, adding: "Heidar is going into semi-retirement to play football in Iceland and we wish him all the best.
"He made a huge contribution for us. With the injury to Nicky Maynard he ended up playing a lot more games then he thought he would.
"Heidar was the man who really stepped up to the plate. He was the battering ram for us and his overall contribution for us, not just in goals scored because he always gets eight to ten in a season, but the way he has contributed to other people scoring goals too.
"He's also a top pro, just he way he carries himself. He's a joy to have around the place. He's the type of character I would fill a club with. I have great admiration for him."

They are footballers not fans, it's a job not a past time. I'm pretty certain they don't even care what colour we play in, only us idiots are excitable about such things. If only we had lives eh.

One of the top pro's to grace Cardiff City over the past few years. Shame that in the 10/11 season we didn't have him and QPR didn't have Bothroyd as we'd have likely gone up instead of them
