Wrexham, Newport, Swansea, Cardiff and Gareth Bale: Why the Welsh rebirth is the REAL story of this season.
From the football wastelands to the promised land, this has been the year of the Welsh.
There have been a few times during the last several years when I wandered down to the Vetch Field to take a peek through the gates at the ruins.
Tucked away in the warren of little streets behind Swansea prison, the disused stadium slowly decayed.
The pitch had become a wasteland of long grass and tall, tall weeds. It was a picture of a history neglected.
Back then, it also seemed like an apt symbol for Welsh football whose clubs were in varying states of distress.
There had been financial horror stories at Cardiff City, Newport County and Wrexham. Football was living a precarious existence at best in Wales.
It is worth mentioning because it makes what has happened this season all the more remarkable.
In some ways, yes, this has been Manchester United’s season but the bigger picture reveals something else.
This has been the year of the Welsh.
