Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan rules out further rebranding

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has ruled out a name change and further rebranding for the Premier League-bound club.
Tan controversially announced the club's rebrand from blue to red in June 2012 and introduced a new club badge.
"We're not going to change the name [and] no more rebranding," Tan said.
"But it's a little bit conflicting when you're singing blues and Bluebirds. When Chelsea come here what do we sing?"
Tan added: "I don't know what we should do about that. It sounds a bit confusing.
"Maybe the fans should think about that and tells us what we should do."

The Malaysian businessman was at Cardiff City Stadium to see Cardiff presented with the Championship trophy after a 1-1 draw against Bolton Wanderers.

Cardiff will play in the Premier League for the first time next season and Tan has said he is willing to offer manager Malky Mackay a £25m transfer fund.

And Tan believes the controversial decision to rebrand the club last summer was the right decision.

"I still believe that red is a lucky colour for Cardiff and for Wales," Tan said.
"After all your national flag is a red dragon so we're putting the red dragon back. The bluebird still remains.
"I jokingly said previously the bluebird can fly, but it's always been bullied by other symbols.

"So now we have the bluebird protected by a strong dragon and the bluebird is teaching the dragon how to fly higher."

Tan was quoted in the Malaysia press as saying he would consider offers for the Welsh club.

But the Malaysian businessman is planning to stay long term and hopes to see Cardiff become an established Premier League club, saying: "God willing, I'd like to be here for the long haul."

From what ive seen of him on tv and the clip of presentation evening, he comes across as quite a funny bloke but who also believes what he is doing is right for the club and not just to spite the fans.

How did you find him Annis? Obviously you dont like everything he has done but on a personal level what kind of guy did you think he was?

Craig,

Tan was approachable, listens, chats and answers everything and has quick answers, he was not the type of person certain people had said he would be.
You can actually have a joke with him and he has an excellent sense of humour.
I brought our identity up to him on 3 occasions,he never once brushed me off, in fact Tan himself on two other occasions brought it back up to me.

No we wont change his mind regarding his love for Red and its not about making money its more about his own beliefs, but I honestly belief those that stay Blue, but respect him, will gain a lot of Respect back from him for not just rolling over.

Tan gave myself respect and in turn there was mutual Respect, but I do not believe or will ever believe Tan is right about the Rebrand, without a doubt in my mind he is wrong and I will never change on that.

Away from the football, you have to admire him, he is rem a Billionaire.

Annis, I do agree the guy must have a sense of humour because who else would purposely wear a red trenchcoat.

A billionaire businessman with a silver tongue and a lot of charisma. No surprise there. Don't get bought in by his propaganda Annis, please. It is no surprise that after meeting up with Hammam, Tan is trying to woo you with his charm. Why? Hammam has obviously told Tan that to win over the discontented then he must win you over.

Tan will never put us back to red. There is no compromise. There is no mutual respect. It's his way or the highway. Simple as. If you think otherwise then you need to get a reality check. He doesn't care about the fans or the club. He just cares about the financial figures. This is all going to end badly. He saved us? Whoever says that has no clue. He's delayed the inevitable in order to make profit.

We've been fucked since Hammam took out that massive loan. This only going to end one way unfortunately. Keep your integrity lads because when all the dust has settled and the rapists have left the club and all that is left is our hardcore, do you want to look back and say you fell for a billionaire's emotional blackmail or do you want to look back and be proud that you didn't fall for his lies, charm and propaganda?

Is it THAT concerning that we play in red and chant blue? I couldn't give a toss. In fact it just becomes another quirk of being a football supporter especially at our club.

If it all stays the same for years to come it will become another talking point when speaking to fans of other clubs. When I work away, football fans lap up the story of the Ayatollah, we have no links with that part of the world but we still do it.

hes saying that as he wants us to refer to the team as the dragons , I think he assumed that once he changed the badge and the kit we would just do that , he's got no f*cking chance of me calling the team the dragons ,they will always be Bluebirds to me , he doesn't understand the traditions of football clubs in the UK

If he re-branded in America with a team with red and dragons then he would get his wish , they love all that sort of stuff over there

annis im really glad you had this talk with him and now have some mutual respect for the man.
i find a lot of people on this forum follow you like sheep on here and dont really think for themselves, so for you to state your respect for tan means a lot to supporters like me who thinks the man as been great for cardiff city football club.
i must admit i dont agree with tan regarding us singing bluebirds but this "we`ll always be blue" is not a great way to get behind the club and believe me in the premier league the boys are going to need all our support more than ever :ayatollah:

I normally like your post's Zabier but this one is a little concerning. I agree Tan might have been hoping to win Annis over, but in the great scheme of things I would imagine that's well down his priority list.

Also if VT was asking Sam Hammam for his opinion on Annis, I very much doubt he was saying Annis can be influenced easily with a "silver tongue and a bit of charisma"

I am fully lost on your claim that "anyone who says he saved us hasn't a clue"

Well if his £6m cash injection in 2010 which was used to pay off the tax bill and stop the winding up order didn't save us then just what did?

I also fail to see how we could keep our integrity if we didn't grasp the opportunity that is now presented to us. What's the alternative, force Tan to leave and tumble down the leagues Portsmouth style? Where is the integrity in that?

Sorry Zab it’s YOU that needs a bit of perspective. We have to earn a living and pay our way in the football industry and we'll never do that by going back to crowds of 3,000 in League 2.

YOU DON'T SAY'''''''''; What do you think the fans should sing/say? You must have an idea surely? Obviously you didn't look at the full scenario or complications of re-branding, It was more than just a kit change, For as long as i can remember BlueBirds BlueBirds has been our homage and salute in greeting the Team emerging from the tunnel and when the Team score it's an in-bedded instinct to chant BloooooBirds, its part of the CCFC Heritage. Mr Tan you changed the clubs colours on a wim with little regard to the clubs traditions, not even a gesture of a compromise, but to be fare to you, it was shocking and disappointing to see the proud fans of Cardiff City roll over so embarrassingly easy and actually beg for the RED Pill of glory, It was cringe-worthy listening to long term fans stating they took the pill to save the club Bless'em, but who would admit taking that pill was more about Manure and Arsenal; Never the less I must commend you for appointing MM Cardiff City Manager, and ending ten years of puppets, But you must take note that it was MM and His staff/Team that achieved promotion not your simulation of Manures kit that you gloat-fully give the impression your re-brand be credited above MM/Staff and Players , In fact' you should thank MM for saving us from ridicule from the opposition as it was hard for them to do so while City were perched at the summit. Anyway im sure we will keep the Premiership amused and confused with chants of Blue for a Team playing in Red. Did you notice Mr Tan 90% of the visiting teams that came to the CCS this season wore Blue even if it was their third kit. BloooooBird TILL I DIE. :old:

Without VT's money, we would in all probability have been liquidated - without any question have been put into administration and lost MM and all the better players.

Credit should go to MM and the players for what they have achieved with the resources VT gave them, but without VT, none of this would have happened. :ayatollah:

I don't think I've seen anyone suggest differently. We may well have gone out of business, we will never know for sure.

However the fact remains, everything he has done and achieved could have been done with us in blue. Then 100% of us would have been as happy as pigs in shit. The situation we find ourselves in could have been so easily avoided if tan had shown us some of the respect he seems to crave from us.

Working with him is definitely the way to go. He's obviously a top businessmen but I'm sure he would admit he knows little about football and its traditions. It sounds like he is approachable at least and has a sense of humour, surely there is some hope for the future. Maybe he will learn that we will never chant come on you reds or dragons etc, so it will become pointless. We don't mind being unique hey, we always have been :ayatollah:
