Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay admits shock over David Marshall PFA snub

Malky Mackay insists he has the best goalkeeper in the Championship after Marshall misses out to Schmeichel
Cardiff City keeper David Marshall missed out on the team of the year.
Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall’s PFA snub came as a complete surprise to Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay.
Marshall has kept a division-best 18 clean sheets and been an ever-present in City’s march to the Championship title.
But the 28-year-old Scotland star still lost out to Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel when the PFA Championship team of the year was announced late on Sunday night.
Schmeichel has kept four fewer clean sheets and Leicester have conceded three more goals than City – and Mackay admitted the vote was a shame as winning a place in the end-of-season team had been one of the challenges he had set Marshall at the start of the campaign.
“I saw the PFA team and must admit it came as a surprise that David wasn’t in it,” said Mackay.
Malky Mackay salutes the fans
“No offence to anyone, but for me I have the best goalkeeper in the Championship and I’ve no doubts about that.
“I think when you look at the stats, too, that is quite clearly the case.
“David has been terrific for me. He’s been a real calming influence at the back and pulled off some vital saves at times.
“At the start of the season I gave him a list of challenges.
“They were to get back in the Scotland squad, get a Scotland cap and keep the most clean sheets in the division.
“The last one was to get in the PFA side.
“Well, he’s not done that one, but he could not have done anymore to try to do it because he’s been superb.”
Centre-back skipper Mark Hudson and midfielder Peter Whittingham were the only two Bluebirds named in the Championship team which featured three Crystal Palace players – Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie and Glenn Murray.
“Mark is just a model professional on and off the pitch. He has been immense for us this season,” said Mackay.
“Peter is hugely respected and admired by his fellow professionals, and that is perhaps the biggest compliment you can get in the game.”
But Marshall, full-back Andrew Taylor and hometown hero Craig Bellamy, who all played a massive part as Cardiff cruised to the Championship title, all failed to make the cut.

I doubt there are many better goalkeepers in the Premiership, let alone the Championship..

I can't believe it, so laughable.
Most clean sheets and against Huddersfield at home he saved us on many times in front of Sky Cameras.
Against Watford he done well and made one vital save which was like a goal.
Apprantley against Peterboro (home) he kept us in the game, I weren't there.
Leicester away he kept us in the game and we took the goal.
Millwall home he made a few saves from that Henderson.

Its quite clear whoever made that team of the year barely watches championship football...
how Whittingham and Zaha made the team when their contributions in the second half of the season were invisible,
Schmeichel made a fair few errors in the televised games i've seen Leicester play this season and Marshall must have won us about 30 points with some of his vital saves.
Thank god we're leaving this league, its run by a bunch of amateurs

I would choose him over the bottom half of that list.
He has been far better than expected this season.

Comparing an exceptional keeper in the Championship is very different than a mid table Prem side (beside QPR, but Cesar is still massive quality). It's like saying you would choose to have Glen Murray in your side over Wayne Rooney.
He's a good keeper, but time will tell if he's up for the Prem. I think he will be, but he won't be anywhere near the top/middle pile of the keeper list.

Obvious why he was snubbed. Very obvious. Marshall has played for us, the Champions. In the process of making us Champions he's been the person stopping other players scoring.
As other players vote for the PFA awards it obvious that they didn't vote for him out of spite. Only logical explanation for it so they instead went for Kaspar. Marshall was quite clearly snubbed because his fine form has annoyed so many other professionals in the league.
I remember the year QPR went up and Paddy Kenny making incredible save after save in games and with each one my hatred of him grew because I knew how important that save could be. It would be foolish to think fellow pro's dont feel the same way.
