velikonja ready to be handed his big chance..

Forgotten Cardiff City striker Etien Velikonja will get his big chance to shine in Saturday's home clash with Bolton Wanderers.

The Slovenian international, who arrived at Cardiff City in the summer for a reported transfer fee of 3.6m Euros, has seen little first team action as the Bluebirds have flown to the top of the Championship this season.

But throughout the season fans have called on manager Malky Mackay to offer a chance to the three times capped 24-year-old. who scored in pre-season against Newcastle United but only featured as a sub in early season clashes at Brighton and Bristol City.

Velikonja, formerly of Slovenian aces Maribor, has however impressed in the Bluebirds' second string, scoring a hatful of goals and linking well with his team mates but has failed to be handed a chance ahead of the likes of Heidar Helguson, Rudy Gestede, Joe Mason and Fraizer Campbell.

But now with the title in the bag, Mackay will turn to Velikonja as Fraizer Campbell, Heidar Helguson and Nicky Maynard remain on the treatment table.

The Scot today said: "We will welcome Etien into the squad for the Bolton game.

"With our injury list growing this week we find ourselves short of options in attack."

If Cardiff City's number nine gets his chance to shine on Saturday, he will hope to play his way into Malky Mackay's Premier League plans next season.

Now this will be interesting. He knows how to score but his area of improvement was more physicality as he gets pushed off the ball to easily. The latter you can work on and if he has then we could be pleasantly surprised tomorrow. He's delivered in almost all of the reserve game so he's doing something right.

I've only just realised he was given the No. 9 shirt!! Seems strange to give him that number and then leave him in the development squad all season! Ah well ...... let's see what he can do, finally!!

Happy for him , a player who hasnt featured a lot but with plenty of natural talent and a youngster who can only get better
