Cardiff City fan gets football banning order after taking smoke bomb to game

The teenage fan was identified from photographs he posted on Facebook of the fixture at Peterborough United.

A football banning order has been imposed on a Cardiff City fan after an away fixture at Peterborough.

Joel David Roberts, 19, from Nantymoel, Bridgend, was given a three-year banning order after admitting being in a possession of a smoke bomb during the game on March 30.

Roberts was identified from photographs of the incident he posted on Facebook.

He was also fined £60, ordered to pay £85 costs, and is banned from attending any football matches in the UK which are regulated under the Football Spectators Act 1989.

He was also made the subject of a community order meaning he must complete 60 hours of unpaid work during the next 12 months.

Pc Christian Evans, from South Wales Police, who investigated the incident, said: "As a result of his irresponsible and disruptive behaviour, Joel Roberts will now miss out on the opportunity of seeing Cardiff City in the Premier League next season."

During the first half of the game, three smoke bombs were activated in the away end causing plumes of smoke to drift across the stand, pitch and surrounding area.

Roberts was arrested on April 2 on suspicion of being in possession of a firework or flare at a sporting event and appeared at Peterborough Magistrates' Court on April 22.

Pc Evans added: "The overwhelming majority of Cardiff City fans are well-behaved and passionate about their team and this kind of behaviour is unusual.

"However, as this case shows, whenever there is evidence of football-related disorder or violence we always pursue those responsible in order that appropriate action is taken."

I seem to remember an incident (someone will enlighten me if it was at the Millennium Stadium ;) ) where a flare was let off across the pitch in a game and caused mayhem in the stands (possibly even death or serious injury)

With CCTV and spotters everywhere it simply isn't worth the risk. Magistrates and Judges just love it when a football supporter pops in to see them.

I'm off to Levski Sofia v CSKA Sofia on Saturday.

By some grace of Allan, may his children have many camels, Levski's ground is being redeveloped into some sort of Bejarie shopping mall so the game is being played at the National Stadium. A walk up buy a ticket on the day job and watch the match. I was strongly advised to stay in the hotel, not wear blue, red, or any combination of said colours, take taxi from hotel to wherever.

I have my two favourite translators escorting me on Saturday and very much looking forward to it.

I'll take some pics and bung them up but as a taster..

feel for the kid regardless. We all do silly things at that age, but taking away my Cardiff would be hard for me to take.

Thank you for that. I thought that was the case :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

If that isn't clear enough evidence of the consequences of daft 'pranks' like this then I don't know what is

Many of todays young (certainly not all) seem to think 'being stupid' is cool. But it isn't and the ramifications are huge, yet they don't seem to appreciate that until it is too late (and even then some will try to justify their actions)

how do you kill someone with a smoke bomb?

Re: 3year Ban,Was it worth it? City fans its def not in my o

To do it was crazy.

To film it and show it was mental.

To write that it was only thrown because it was burning his hands, total lunacy.

We can sing "you'll never ban a City fan" but unfortunately they can and do, and we should know better than most clubs.

We also sing "we're Cardiff City, we'll do what we want" yes we can until we are identified and caught, then the judge sings,

"I'm Lord Chief Justice, I can jail who I want"

And the even madder thing is, since this case we have had some more let off at Watford, Burnley, and even at home, and the dullest yet during the celebrations on the pitch, someone let one off and was holding it in full view of the cameras
Knock on the door knock on the door, sit there waiting, for the knock on the door.

He'll be watching us in the Premiership on TV, that is if they got one in his cell, because the lads caught had Swansea actually went to jail for simply possessing one, not even setting it off. :old:

And I thought I was bonkers when i was a kid.

Don't think the bloke intended killing anyone with a flare, but he did and at the time I was sitting four rows behind the chap that got killed along with my ten year old son.

The Thirty six that got burned to death in Bradford, died because someone dropped a fag on litter under the stand, don't think they expected to be killed by a cigarette (f**k me, I'm starting to turn into a sensible boring old man   )

I would say the pitch invasion and lifting up the players was more dangerous than the smoke bomb, but hey ho what do I know.

An incredibly stupid thing to do given the extensive CCTV coverage we are all aware of. I still think three years is rather harsh, you would hope his lesson has already been learned.

Smoke bomb aint that bad. we all grow up and as long as there is no danger to anyone i think they should allow it at the end of games maybe.

He should have bitten an opposing fan, he would have only got a 10 game ban then.

It was only a bloody smoke bomb, we were all young once.

Ridiculous sentence.

This is such a bullshit case!

The lad who did it must be gutted. He's a juvenile ffs. Giving he got no previous surely educating him and giving him some sort of fine & maybe a ban until the new season would of been appropriate.

A stupid error in excitement has cost him 3years of nonsense.

And two hundred people letting them off at the end of the game shouldn't cause to much confusion risk or problem

Being serious, it is such a hard thing to legislate for, if someone broke a leg coz they couldn't see through the smoke, or it brought on an asthma attack etc. the club would be hit sideways with damages, mad world, but it's the one we live in. :old:

It was at the Wales v Romania world cup qualifying match and the culprit was charged and convicted of murder as it was argued that he pointed the flare in the direction of the stand opposite knowing it could cause death or serious injury. He was given a life sentence. :(

Could have been worse he could have sent down like those chelsea lads at the liberty. Those daft twats hadn't even set the things off. Anybody taking such devices to a game deserves a life ban down to being so fecking stupid. We all know a smoke bomb isnt dangerous but the authorities love nicking us so why do it. Brain dead?

End of the day you are told very clearly what you can't bring into a ground, if he can't f*cking behave himself then and use his ears he should bee banned, end off. As harsh as it is you are told very clearly the consequences of breaking the rules he just wanted to show off to his mates and brag about it on the latest social networking.
