Young drivers car insurance - HELP!!

Sun Apr 21, 2013 11:28 pm

I'm looking to do my driving test in the next month and then I am going to purchase a car. The only problem is everywhere I look the insurance seems to be so expensive, so expensive that I cannot afford it. I am talking £4000 for a 1 litre engine car that was made in 2001!!!

I have heard of this black box which I am seriously considering getting installed to lower my premium. Does anyone have any quotes? Ideally I don't want to be paying more than £1.5k a year, even then I am pushing the boundary! :(

Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Evening fella, you're going to need to bite the bullet for at least the 1st 12 months, go for an insurance group vehicle 1 or 2 ideally, i think it might be aviva who are using the black box system, vest bet is to try as many comparison websites as possible and then a couple of local insurance brokers.

What you've got to remember is that the insurance company isn't just covering your car, they're covering you, so even if you're pootling along in a £500 cortina you can easily smash into a car worth £40-£50k and cost them a pretty packet!

The cars I have been looking at are in group one and two though. I don't know but to me it sounds like the figures are probably just way off, to what they should be.

I've narrowed my search down to get either a VW Polo, Vauxhall Corsa or a Renault Clio. I've been quoted ridiculous sums for these of £4000.

Wouldn't recommned that, its called fronting and is illegal. You may well get cheap cover this way, but if there's a claim, it'll be investigated by a loss adjuster appointed by the insurance company and they'll probably not pay out as you've tried to defraud them, as i say, bite the bullet for the 1st 12 months...

Remember through that many price comparison websites are owned by a typical insurance company anyway so their own insurance quotes always come up cheapest when that may not be the case. For example I think its GoCompare which is owned by Admiral who also own Shelias wheels, elephant and many others which are under the same umbrellea

Thank you. You've both been very helpful, some of this has been driving me around the bend!

I've read in some places that my insurance premiums will be between £600 and £1000 a year and then £2000 - £4000 in other places.

i had same problem with my lads then i found co-op young drivers insurance. cheapest by mile and it fully comp. they fit a smartbox tracker to the car and it monitors every aspect of your driving. it scores you 1 to 5 and your premiums go down if yout driving improves every 3 months.

add your parents as it reduces cost. we played about with policy to get it cheaper.

That doesn't sound too bad. I'm looking at a Volkswagen Polo preferably, 1 litre engine, 2001 or 2002 model. I will have to see what co-op quote me.

Thank you! :D

I love it how young drivers whinge about the cost of insurance. They are not picking on you, they simply charge what the risk is. So the answer to high prices is STOP DRIVING LIKE ARSEHOLES!!! and the cost will come down.

Personally if I had my way I'd up the driving age for boys to 21. They are no where near mature enough at 17. At that age they are out playing with their toys, that's why they stick those noisy exhausts on the cars so they can go Brooommm.... Broommmm... everywhere.

As suggested best bet is to take insurance out in own name. Put down parents too as that help too. Without stand alone ins in your name you dont build up no claims! We had same problem with my sons corsa 3 years ago. Was 2200 by 3rd year 600. However my nephew got black box fitted and got ins for1200. Try admiral i think my son is elephant but theyre all part of same group. Hope that helps

I'm going to tell you what pisses me off with comments like this. You're just being a stereotype and comparing the minority of people like me who just want a car to get around, to make life easier compared to the dick heads who like you said "drive like arseholes"

Re: Young drivers car insurance - HELP!!

If I were you I'd get a parent to be the main driver and get yourself on the policy as a named driver. As long as your parent drives the car every now and again I don't see any reason not to. Then if you're in an accident, you're the driver so it shouldn't effect their no claims. I did it 10 years ago and I had a 1997 106 insured for about £800, third party fire and theft. As the main driver I was looking in excess of £1500. Unfortunately young male drivers are deemed to be the most risky so the insurance is higher. I can see why though, I crashed 3 times in my first couple of years!

can't do that anymore matey, they've cracked down on it

best just to bite the bullet, get your own insurance and build your no claims up and it will get lower each year

Spot on. I need to drive to work. At the moment I'm having lifts, but there's only so many lifts you can get. I've done my theory but I can't afford the insurance to go with a car. Not all 17 year olds drive like lunatics

Re: Young drivers car insurance - HELP!!

I don't know if this helps but back in the 80's when I was starting out.... but people bought the lowest possible group car. I don't know what that would be today maybe on of those cars that the front opens up, and it does about 20mph flat out. Basically you'd just buy the number plate and scrap the car. You'd insure that for one or two years and that would build up your no claims until you bought a car you were actually going to drive. It just means you can't have a car until you are 18.

I remember it because one type of car was very popular for this (can't remember which one) and even falling apart ready for scrap, no chance of a MOT etc, they were going for good money because lads were after them to insure for a year.

As a former disgraced councillor you should know better than to suggest an illegal activity such as fronting to a young driver looking to get insured.
