City leading the chase to sign Jonathan Williams!

Sun Apr 21, 2013 12:23 am

Tale of two Cities: Cardiff will compete with Manchester City for Crystal Palace midfielder Jonathan Williams
Arsenal and Everton are also ready to bid for 19-year-old Welsh sensation compared to David Silva

Cardiff are ready to prove their ambition by battling Manchester City to sign Welsh sensation Jonathan Williams.
City are leading the chase to sign Williams after sending assistant-manager David Platt to watch the Crystal Palace midfielder three times.

Arsenal and Everton are also ready to bid for 19-year-old Williams, but that will not put off Cardiff – who have secured promotion to the Premier League.

Cardiff’s Malaysian owner Vincent Tan is willing to back manager Malky Mackay with substantial funds.

Williams has already been identified as a top target for Cardiff, despite the fact the club are fully aware they will face a huge fight for the player’s signature. His performances for Palace have earned the nickname Joniesta Williams because of comparisons in his game to Barcelona superstar Andres Iniesta.

Williams attracted widespread praise for his displays for Wales, against Scotland and Croatia back in March. Palace manager Ian Holloway has called Williams ‘our David Silva’. He is desperate to keep the teenager, but knows that may only be possible if the Eagles win promotion to the Premier League.

Having got a £15m deal for Wilfried Zaha from Manchester United, Palace will hold out for at least £8m for Williams.

We can challenge and I hope Malky is looking at this fella as it would be brilliant to bring him in. We got KIM and he was being chased by Borussia Dortmund and Celtic.

Stupid story. Why would we spend nearly £10m of our £25m budget on one player when we need a squad full.

No, I said a squad full, not a full squad... There's a difference.

We a need a squad full of quality players. You do realise if we sign Williams for say £9m, Ramsey for say £9.5m and Solomon Kalou for £6.5m then We have spent all our money don't you?

Nonsense story, nonsense logic.

You think the £25m is a dead on figure or even a true one? You're a bigger muppet than I thought. Tan will spend what he wants at the end of the day and hes just putting all of this out there so he doesn't get done over like Liverpool did. As soon as clubs knew Liverpool had £50m+ to spend they were straight away out there trying to rip them off. Newcastle and Villa succeeded big time with the Carroll and Downing transfers. You could even throw Henderson into that but hes young so if you factor in possible potential you may have to give the benefit of the doubt on that one.

People are absolutely deluded if they think that figure is a strict budget marker. I did actually have more respect for your points as a lot of them are truthful, to the point and full of sense no matter how controversial they are but for you to believe that is a strict indication of budget is absurd.

Surely you do not think that.... :?

Yes I think that is the budget, maybe not even that much. Malky has UP TO £25m. Spending wildly doesn't get a profit, he's a businessman at the end of the day, not an oil tycoon with his play thing,

By saying Jon Williams will take up a third of our budget?

Again it's realistic I'm afriad.

Re: City leading the chase to sign Jonathan Williams!

I wouldn't want to spend all our money on williams, however the money used on him could be seen as more of an investment. If we give him a four year contract and he just simply run it down we would still get a return because he'd still be under 24.
I said last summer that we should have put in a 3 million bid when he was coming back from injury, but i still think 8 million is a good investment for a lad so young and so highly thought of.

If I remember the jacks only signed graham, routledge and caulker on loan. We have a squad now as good, probably better than what they went up with. Nobody gave them much of a chance, even their own fans. Same goes for Norwich.

8M for Williams would be an absolute steal, he's only going to get better. This is the signing we need to make, if things go tits up you have to think he'll go for more than 15M. Look at Joe Allen, a below average midfielder going for 15m.

He's set for the big time, question is do we need a central midfielder when we are so weak in other areas of the pitch?

I think he's generally a central midfielder but can play out wide, would be a great signing nonetheless.

It would still be crazy money to pay at the time. Tis attitude is what got us into £120m debt. Stop urging the club to gamble.

He's a teenager and primarily an attacking force yet has never score a professional goal in his career. Yet you are advocating spending a third of our whole budget on him.

Sorry, it's madness.

For once I am agreeing with a jack and agreeing with you Roathy. Yes even tho he is potentially a premiership star. Still a gamble imo and I'd rather spend the money on someone with a bit more experience. Thomas ince got lots of championship experience and goals and England u21 international so he would be less of a gamble I'd go for him

Swansea were far better equipped to go up than we are.

They had Britton, Sinclair, dyer, Rangel, Williams, Taylor and allen. That's 7 good starting premier league players. Added to that....

The jacks signed Vorm, Caulker, sigurdson, graham and routledge.

Their style of play also gives opposing teams less time to attack them, we have a traditional British game.

Last season Tan said exactly how much he would put in this summer and most were able to work out that meant Malky had up to £10m to spend and he spent pretty much exactly £10m

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/cardi ... n_603.html

So there is no reason to not believe the figure he has put out for next season, the only thing I would suggest is maybe some of the £25m will be held back in case we need to boost the squad in January.

They only signed vorm as devries left. Sigursson came on loan later in the season. None of the other names you mentioned had PL experience and they were widely tipped to go down. A lot of their football had been played league 1 even. Cardiff matched them the season they went up, yet we have a better squad than we had then. You're talking in hindsight, so until we are tested you simply don't know how we will perform.

I think Malky will buy for January in the summer. He doesnt like the january window so i think he will buy a couple of players who will take time to adapt like kimbo who would then be like new signings for the second half the season.

Getting Sigardsson was what kept them out of a relegation fight. He had almost as big an impact as Michu has had this season.

Yes he had a big impact. I find it funny though how so many swans players were suddenly always all PL quality when the truth is nobody expected them to do well. I don't think players we have like Marshall, Taylor, Hudson, Whitts, Kim, Mutch, Bellamy and the potential of Mason, Noone and Turner wouldnt compare favourably to what Norwich and Swansea had when they went up. It just points to the fact that some on here haven't seen them play very often ;)
