Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay is ready to raise the bar following promotion
Mackay: " Promotion will live with me forever. "
Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay admits he has no option but to raise the bar again after the club ended a 51-year wait for top flight football in the Welsh capital.
The Bluebirds will join arch-rivals Swansea in the top flight after securing promotion from the Championship with Tuesday night's 0-0 draw against Charlton.
But Mackay insists he will have to raise the standards at the Cardiff City Stadium in the summer by bringing in top-quality players to add to his existing squad.
"How many of them? Well that's something we have to look at in the summer, but as many good players as I can basically."
Malky Mackay on potential signings
He told Sky Sports: "We've got a really good group here and a group that I think can challenge at the next level up. Again, to have that standard raised which absolutely is a must at Premier League level we're going to need to bring in players as well.
"How many of them? Well that's something we have to look at in the summer, but as many good players as I can basically. It's really about raising the standards.
"Again, we've done that in the first year here, raised the standards again this year and we're going to have to do it again next year.
"I think change is constant and if you don't go with change, if you don't keep pushing forward and keep trying to strive for the best you're left behind and that would certainly be us aswell and I won't let that happen while I'm here."
Cardiff's Malaysian owner Vincent Tan could spend up to £25 million on new players in the summer, but Mackay says he has yet to discuss any figures yet.
"We've not sat down with exact figures at the moment. I know the owner was thrown a question by someone a couple of months ago but myself and him will sit down.
"Me and my recruitment department have already started planning quietly as to 'what if' scenario if we did get promoted.
"We will be on going with that but it will be only players that can come in and help the group and help achieve in what we want which is to stay in the Premier League."
Victory over Burnley on Saturday would see Cardiff claim the Championship title, although two further opportunities would present themselves against Bolton and Hull should City not win at Turf Moor.

The thing is not wasting money on big names like qpr, sunderland, stoke have done and look where they are! We need cheap talent who have the never quit attitude mm likes who will work their socks off for the team. Southampton and the jacks have done it without spending big or bringing in big names!!

Definitely not like QPR who bought overrated players for big money and on massive wages and they were shite. Swansea proved shrewd signings like Mitu and Southampton bought very wisely

But i cant see Malky bringing in any big time Charlie's to be fair.

Southampton did spend a bit but the wages won't be as bad as most clubs.
Southampton play good money and Rodriguez has been on great perform since Xmas time.

It is all about spending wisely and not changing the wage structure too drastically.
Bring in a mix of old and new. We need a couple of players with experience of the Premiership or one of the similar leagues in Europe but we also need some youngsters from the Championship who are keen to show what they can do at a higher standard.
There are plenty of players outside the UK who would love to play in the Premiership - which is how the Jacks manage to bring in players. I'm sure Malky will be looking at countries like Poland, Croatia, Netherlands etc where you can pick up solid defenders at bargain prices.
One thing to remember is that you can only register 25 players in the Premiership. These will all be players aged 21 or over as there is no limit on the number of under 21 players you can register. So expect a few more youngsters to be signed. There will be a huge turnover of players in the summer....don't be surprised if we lose at least 10 players. Some of those will be stalwart players you would expect Malky to keep. Unfortunately there is no room for sentiment and if they are not considered good enough for the Premiership they will be replaced. I am talking about players like McNaughton, Kiss, Cowie, Conway, McPhail, Smith, Velikonja, Helguson and Lappin. Might even be a few surprises. Whatever happens there will be big changes.
Rumours will abound, as they are already, but take most of those with a pinch of salt.

if you ditch that many of your core squad straight away you will end up the same as QPR, strengthen key areas but leave the core the same

As your mob actually ditched 10 players when you went up, your point is....and the players QPR got rid of would have been sorely out of place in the Premiership, with the exception of Leigertwood.
West Ham got shot of 15 players in the summer they went up and made 8 permanent signings. Most teams who get promoted have to make wholesale changes as Championship squads simply don't survive in the Premiership.
I would expect the minimum we get rid of is 8 but possibly more if we can get decent money for them. If someone comes in with a good bid for Whittingham I'm sure it would be considered.
