Cardiff City boss Mackay: 'I hope this promotion repays fans' faith in me'

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay speaks of his pride after leading the Bluebirds to the promised land of the Premier League

Cardiff City's long wait for top-flight football is over after the Bluebirds sealed promotion to the Premier League last night.

Their goalless draw with Charlton left Malky Mackay’s men untouchable at the top of the Championship. And with Cardiff’s nearest rivals, Hull and Watford, losing at Wolves and Millwall respectively, just one more win in their remaining three matches will secure the Bluebirds the league title.

After a recent history scarred with near-misses, thousands of fans celebrated the historic moment on the Cardiff City Stadium pitch as a dream was realised.

It ends a 51-year absence from the top division, with an overjoyed Mackay promising his team will be ready to compete in the Premier League.

Cardiff will join rivals Swansea City in the elite next season, and manager Mackay said: “It is a huge challenge because we are going into one of the best leagues in the world. But we go there with good staff and good people.

“We will plan properly and that has begun already – now we are ready to put that plan into action. And we will make sure what we have done over the last two years in terms of structure at the club and striving forward will continue to give ourselves the best chance.

“And through that we will try and be competitive.

“When I came here one of the things I said was that fans will accept mistakes, but not a lack of effort, and because of that we have always been competitive in every game we have played.

“We have won and lost games but we have always competed – that won’t change.”

The challenge that awaits will wait as the celebration sparked by last night’s draw continues in the Welsh capital today.

Cardiff captain Craig Bellamy admitted his “utter relief” at seeing the job through having led the division since November.

And a beaming Mackay – whose can win the title this weekend with victory at Burnley – added: “I am very proud of the football club. This is an occasion where the people of this club have waited a long time for and gone through a lot of disappointment along the way.

“They have been through tough times, our owner has put a lot of money in, and the players, people have waited for a long time to be in top division.

“But they have backed me since I have been here and I am very grateful for that. Hopefully this repays that a little.”

Meanwhile Cardiff’s Malaysian owner pledged there will be no more upheaval the like of which saw the club re-brand to a red home strip last summer.

“No more changes to the shirt and the name will stay the same, always,” said Vincent Tan after he had taken the applause of the ecstatic crowds at the Cardiff City Stadium.

“Malky Mackay has done a great job. He is a great manager.

“It is wonderful, a fantastic feeling. I looked at all the fans and everybody is so happy. Now we need to plan how to stay up in the Premier League. That will be a tough one for us.

“But it is not an impossible challenge. God willing we would like to stay up there a long time.”

There were meany people on here last year that said they would judge Malky on his second season, as we had next to nothing of a squad when he joined.
Well I think we can safely say it was the best appointment! Some games might not be pretty, but what you can say is that he has built a team that doesn't back down, they keep on and on and on.
What a night, what a season, what a journey.

I actually think one should be built. The guy hasn't just got us promoted. He took a team that was broken and full of gaping holes due to players like Bothroyd leaving etc. out of contract, rebuilt from the bottom up and took us to Wembley in the process.

That season when he first came in he had to plan for this season. He's planned perfectly and executed it this season perfectly. We overachieved getting to the playoffs vs West Ham. Its was a consolidation season to sort things out but Malky and the team exceeded expectations even then.

Class act of a man. :malky:
