Iceland striker Heidar Helguson will miss the game against Charlton with a hamstring injury picked up in the win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
His replacement Rudy Gestede scored twice but must compete with Joe Mason for a starting spot.
Chris Powell is set to keep the same Charlton squad that thrashed Barnsley 6-0 and scorer Salim Kerkar could make the starting line-up.
Defender Leon Cort, back after a knee injury, may stay on hold for Saturday.
MATCH FACTSHead-to-head• These clubs are meeting for the first time since Charlton came back from two goals down to beat Cardiff 5-4 at The Valley in November.
• That was the highest scoring match ever between these clubs, and gives the Addicks the chance of a league double over the Welsh club last achieved in the 2007-08 Championship campaign.
• Cardiff are four league goals shy of 100 against Charlton, but they have lost three of their last five home league games against these opponents, failing to score in the process.
Cardiff City• Cardiff will be playing top-flight football for the first time in 51 years if they avoid defeat by Charlton, or if Watford, away to Millwall, do no better than draw.
• The Bluebirds, who have missed out in the play-offs for the last three seasons, are unbeaten in four (W2, D2), have suffered one defeat in eight, and have lost only two of their last 27 home Championship fixtures.
• Should Malky Mackay's side require further fixtures to complete the task, they still have to visit Burnley and Hull, with a home match against Bolton in between.
• Icelandic midfielder Aron Gunnarsson is hoping to make his 200th start for English and Welsh clubs.
Charlton Athletic• Charlton are coming off a 6-0 victory at Barnsley on Saturday and are chasing a third successive league win, to stretch their unbeaten run to five.
• Chris Powell's men have picked up 10 points out of 12, and 13 points from the last six games to lead the Championship's form table.
• The south-east London club are three places and six points outside the play-offs, with home games against struggling Wolves and Bristol City to come, either side of an away trip to out-of-form Middlesbrough.
• The Addicks have also won three more games, lost three fewer and gained nine more points on their travels than at the Valley, the greatest such discrepancy in the Championship.
