Why have we been so successful this season?

Sun Apr 14, 2013 6:01 pm

We have so nearly done it. But why? What's different this year, from all of the others? Many of you in previous weeks have called for Malky's head after a draw or a loss, and have said he is 'tactically inept'. He's a young manager, and is bound to make mistakes. I believe we have one of the best up and coming managers in the game.

I think the difference is the way MM has engraved such a phenomenal work rate and work ethic, and making sure that every player that plays has the right attitude and gives there all. I also feel the players such as Bellamy, Campbell, Kimbo, Mutch etc. who have undoubted quality, also have such a high work-rate and fit in with MM's style of play absolutely perfectly. He doesn't do what DJ did and sign quality players on loan who don't have to give their all because they know once the seasons done they will be back at their parent club. It's also the way he develops players. Just think of Taylor when he first joined us, he was a weak link, and now he is so solid in attack and defence. Another example would be Gunnarsson, who gives his all every single game and is improving every single game. You can have quality players but unless they give their all you will achieve nothing. Just look at QPR. We have the quality and the work ethic. He's also not afraid to change things around and drop a regular in Whittingham.

It's down to Malky if you ask me. :ayatollah: :malky:

Perfect assumption of what the difference has been :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Malky is professional through n through, Hudson aswell is a great role model captain,

Would love to see Huds lift that trophy soon :ayatollah:

Re: Why have we been so successful this season?

Last season Malky immediately made Cardiff difficult to beat as soon as he got here. Up until the FA Cup third round in January we had won 12 drawn 9 and lost only 4 but there had been at least 8 occasions where we had got ourselves into a position to take more points than we ended up with because we conceded the last goal. Then came our slump of winning only 3 drawing 6 and losing 5 before our form picked up in the last 6 games again.

This season we were even more difficult to break down and by the FA Cup third round we had won 18 drawn 2 and lost 6 and only on 3 occasions let ourselves be pegged back when we had the opportunity to take more points although these were epic failures at Charlton, Palace and Bolton where each time we were winning and ended up losing. Then came our slump but even our slump wasn't that bad this year with 7 wins 6 draws and 3 defeats since then.

Whatever Malky has done to make us difficult to break down he is going to have to take to another level next year.

Re: Why have we been so successful this season?

Malky found the model for getting out of the division...

It ain't pretty but its effective, found the players to fit the model and jettisoned all the ego's.

Oh yeah and Tan paid for them....

It's an awful league this year and we spent £15m on players and took out loans to pay for wages on top of devoting 100% of any income to wages.

Not a tricky concept.

Your prediction from August was posted earlier. Didn't think we'd make the top 6. So if it's not a tricky concept, why did you get it so wrong?

I didnt predict anything, I joined 8 weeks ago.

Although if someone did make a prediction in August based on the team we had in August and you are asking why someone got it wrong then it's probably for the reasons you just quoted. We since spent £15m on players, took out loans on top of dedicating 100% of income to pay wages and were in an awful league where two of the prem teams could see themselves in league 1 next year.

Why stick with the facade? As one of the few who was against your banning its a tad pointless.

You could admit you were wrong thoug, on about continuing the downward slide of last season into this one. All way off.

The league being weaker is another silly one. Sure 2/3 Prem teams that came down have been toss. But in the past two years Norwich then Southampton went from L1 to the Prem without stopping. Hardly makes those years seem so strong.

If I was whom you are suggesting then I'd have no issue saying so.

But to the point, I'm not sure whats confusing you. If a team is picking up 1.2 points per game and it's said that if they continue like that they won't make the top 6 then that's a factual statement, not an opinion. If man united keep this form up they will probably be champions again, yet if they lose all their games next season the initial statement would still be correct.

If your of the opinion that promotion is more important than the clubs traditions and well being then I'd suggest be thankful that tan has spent nearly £16m on players and £20m on wages and charged it all to the club for the whole sum +7%.

As for the league not being weaker - that's just silly. It's obvious to almost all that it is. Hull, Watford and palace are our nearest challenges FFS and they are dross. We have barely dominated a team and are top by 6 points. It's clearly weaker.

Was thinking the same regarding loan signings. Look at the difference in the loans we had under DJ who looked like they didn't give a shit at the end of the season compared 2 Leon Barnett who has given his all and seems so passionate for us! Shows he team spirit we have built and Malky should take great credit for that.

That makes this league weak, not weaker than a league where a L1 team can finish second. In the past 3-4 years the whole of English football has taken steps backwards starting from the top. With the exception of Chelsea, English teams in Europe have been dire and that has rippled down. It's why Championship teams have been able to fare better in the Prem.

As someone who agrees with a fair amount of what you say its sad you go to passive insults towards someone having a normal debate with you, quite sad. I'm not going to bite like most on here (which includes you).

What? Where are my passive insults? I'm simply disagreeing with you.

I also disagree that the premier league is weaker. You are basing your assumptions essentially on a knock out competition. This season man united should have knocked out Real Madrid over 2 legs if it wasn't for an insane referee decision.

Last season saw the greatest premier league title battle in history between man united and a man city team boasting the likes of tevez, Aguero, silva, komoany, Yaya and a host of others while Chelsea were beating Barca and going on to win the champions league.

Since then tell me what players have left in order to weaken the league, I can only think of Balotelli. Yet the amount of talent brought in has been incredible - Michu, carzola, hazard, Kagawa, Oscar, coutinho and many more.

The league is stronger than last year. As for the championship, look at the teams at the top. Watford are in with a shout at promotion automatically and basically have the reserve side of a mid table side in a massively weaker league than the prem. it's crazy. It's been a freak year this year, but we have been the most consistent and hard working so we have taken advantage.
