Cardiff City and Promotion

Sun Apr 14, 2013 4:35 pm

In May 1960, I stood on the Bob Bank at Ninian Park at 13 years of age and watched the city win promotion to the old first division , coal dust around my feet, from the sidings behind the bob bank, standing on railway sleepers, shouting until I was horse and running on the sacred turf at the end, grasping Danny Malloy's hand clapping Joe Bonson on the back, getting Graham Moor's autograph, I thought we were kings of football.
In June/July the fixtures came out, we were playing Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bolton, Aston Villa, Manchester utd, Blackpool, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers, all top clubs of the day. In the first season we climbed to 6th at one stage with some good results, then we started to slide, eventually finishing just above relegation. the following season we climbed to 5th, beating the spurs after they had won their first 15 matches and drawn their 16th' it was on a Saturday night, because the rugby international was played in the afternoon, it came up on the old match of the day then it was in black and white, we were losing 2-1, then the final score came up we won 3-2, those were fantastic days.

Now the reason for my post, there will be a lot of you who have never seen Cardiff City in their real glory days, so remember this, the euphoria will be there before and after we kick off, but that will start to wain when we loose a few matches, or have a bad run, we are not going to set the premiership on fire, it can,t be done with an inexperienced side coming up from the championship, there are the top teams, two of which have never ever been out of the old 1st division or the premiership, Everton & Arsenal, what we have to do is get behind the club win or loose, the worst thing we can do is drift away and not go just because we loose some matches, believe me it gets hard knowing you going to watch your team get a hiding from the big boys, but you hang in there, renew your season ticket.
For the first time I have people from other teams saying they cannot compete with us because of who we can buy, or our facilities, every top team has to start somewhere, this is our beginning, stay on board for the ride, believe me it can get exciting.

This season we have been targeting 10 points from each set of five games, next season it will be targeting 6 points from each set of 5 games. My expectations are lower than this but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
