Europa League a Nightmare in Disguise?

Sun Apr 14, 2013 3:34 pm

Is qualification for the Europa league a bit of a nightmare in disguise?
After having a good season last year and qualifying for the Europa league Newcastle United find themselves 23 points worse off at this point this season to last season and are battling relegation. Alan Pardew blames fatigue for their poor form and Europa league games will be the result of this fatigue.
So my point is I think going off Newcastle and the fatigue Pardew talks about I think Swansea could struggle next season do you?
Imagine that what a shame? Is the Europa league all that good after all..

Seems to have been a hindrance to Birmingham and Newcastle. However, Chelsea, Spurs, Man City didn't seem too effected by it. I think its depending on the size of squad you have and of course the luck of the draw. If you draw a Russian club away on a Thursday night its going to be a lot more difficult to recover compared to a Spanish or French club for instance.

Another Jack thread, they used to be obsessed with us.

Couldn't give a f**k about the Jacks unless we are playing them. The rest of the time they are an irrelevance.

I just think its a shit competition that many of the EPL sides don't even take seriously when they get in it but does seem to adversely effect results. The positive from not winning the league cup last season was not having to play in it as it could well have compromised our promotion push. The jacks are welcome to it.

You couldn't make it up, well actually you could. You are saying that you are glad we lost a cup final just so we could get promoted. The history books will look at cup wins not a 16th place finish in the premier league.

The premiership is no the be all end all of supporting a club, I for one would have loved to have seen us beat Liverpool at wembley last season and play in Europe and would have taken that over promotion this season. Seems like some weren't around in the dark days when all that was a distant dream.

Yes I would actually. I didn't want the European football - but certainly wanted to win the cup.

Reason? Would have affected our promotion bid this season in my mind.

Good point if we had beaten Liverpool and been playing Europa league this year I rekan with squad injuries and fatigue we would be struggling to make the play offs this year. Good luck jacks

Spurs and Chelsea certainly took the competition seriously.I watched all the Spurs games and they wanted to win it.Chelsea are in the semis so they're obviously trying.Newcastle are shit and thats why they're out and 'not taking it seriously'.

Read it properly. I didn't say I was glad we lost the final, I wish we had. I said that the fact we didn't have to play in the Europa cup was a positive in that it could have affected our promotion push. So you would rather we go up this year for the sake of a cup run in Europe? Each to their own.

Yeah but we would have won a cup and played in Europea with potential ties against Inter Milan, Atheltico Madrid, PSV and Lyon. Not forgetting should we have made it through ties against the Champions league drop outs. I'd have take the risk, it's a position that astounds me. We won f**k all for years and you'd still rather us play in the premier league than win something.

We could win the title this year. That's winning something or doesn't that count in your world?

Did you know that back then? By your flawed logic you would rather see us win the championship and not go up because we will have a better chance of winning this league again and again.

Actually lets move to the welsh leagues we will win that over and over again. Special day was that game vs Liverpool, would have loved to have won it but there we go, as long as we get to the premier league and get tonked week in week out. At least you will get to see Rooney.

Yeah he wants to win it every year and not go up, better chance of winning stuff then init.

Watching the City-Chelsea game now, City fans creating a superb atmosphere having a party at Wembley. Could have been us last year if it wasn't for that scouse prick missing his penalty and to think some on here are almost gleeful we lost.

Astounding.

I wanted to win it, just not bothered about Europe. Can't see why that's so difficult to understand.

And yeah I want us to win the title but its because I want us to win every game. Does the EPL excite me? Not really as I know we will be cannon fodder like all teams other than the top 6 are. But let's give it a go and see what happens.
Not interested in seeing any teams other than Cardiff, and certainly not Rooney. I've been there in the dark times, not sure you can say the same in truth, seen as how you have to pretend to be a character to make your points

I want to see Cardiff win every game. That inevitably leads to promotion. We've have good seasons for a hole now, going up is going to be a mindset change as we aren't going to win anywhere near the same number of games. That's reality. I'd rather beat forest than lose to Man U. If that makes be wrong then ill live with it.

Lets put things in perspective here. Swanseas busiest time of this season was between 23rd Dec and Jan 29th in which we played 11 games including Man Utd, Chelsea twice, Arsenal twice And Everton away. We lost one of those 11! ;)

We won 3. Away at Chelsea in lge cup. Away at Fulham and Home to Stoke. But with 5 lge draws included, it was probably that period which guaranteed our premiership survival for another year despite playing 11 games in 37 days in three different competitions against top premiership sides. We were good enough to it this year when we had too, and will be better prepared next! ;)

Over a similar time period we won 6 league games and drew 1. Turn some of those wins into draws / defeats and we wouldn't be in the position we are now, so not having the distraction of even more games in the Europa league has surely benefitted us. It doesn't mean I didn't want to win the cup, but I'm glad we haven't had more games to cope with.

I certainly see your point, but it looks like this thread has turned into a debate on 2 fronts!
1/Whether the Europa lge will see us struggle next year? answer: I dont think it will.
and

Hmmm! Despite the point I made earlier I kinda hope you don't! ;) I said it a long time ago on here, and I'll say it again. When it comes down it Man Utd, Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City will be secondary when it comes to us playing each other in the premier league! ;)

Totally agree. There is zero excitement in the Europa lge group stages no matter who is in it. To be honest I'm not overly excited with us being in it unless we get passed that stage. Boring as f**k! And that goes for the Champions league as well. You know more or less which 2 clubs will go through and the only excitement is hoping Man Utd get knocked out! :laughing6:
