Bellamy,I miss Ninian Park,game is a business,My Finest Hour

Craig Bellamy speaks his mind.

'Taking Cardiff City to the Premier League would be my finest hour,' says Craig Bellamy

Craig Bellamy says taking Cardiff City up would be his football legacy

Craig Bellamy is desperate to take Cardiff City to the Premier League.

Cardiff City captain Craig Bellamy has declared he wants his home-town Bluebirds in the Premier League to become his football legacy.

The 33-year-old City talisman, who has starred in the UEFA Champions League for Liverpool and Newcastle and also struck the winning goal for Wales against Italy, insists helping the Bluebirds into the top flight would be his finest achievement.

Bellamy is determined to inspire Cardiff to victory over Nottingham Forest this weekend, the next step towards promotion.

In an exclusive interview, he insists that achieving that Premier League dream would take sport in and around the Welsh capital into a whole new dimension.

And, unlike the Dave Jones Class of 2011, Bellamy is adamant this time there will be no slip-up.

“The impact the Premier League could have on the community, youngsters and also businesses will be great,” Bellamy told us.

“That would be my legacy.

“When you get to my age you realise that in a couple of years time you don’t know what will happen.

“Have I got another big injury in me? Probably not.

“I can have a sense of achievement that while I didn’t start my career here, I did end it here.

“And I ended on the right note. I was able to give something back to the area I grew up in.

“If we do go up, of course that would be the highest achievement in my career.

“I wouldn’t mind sitting here in a month’s time having achieved that and telling people about it.

“It’s difficult to say it at the moment because I have to show respect to Hull and Watford. I don’t want them to turn around and say ‘Look at Cardiff, they think they are already up’. Because we aren’t yet.

“But we are getting there. And if we do reach the Premier League, it will take is onto another level.

“The impact promotion could have on my community could last years and years. That is what drives me on. That is what gives me satisfaction at this football club.

“We could make an impact that no previous Cardiff City team has been able to.”

Dismissing fears Malky Mackay’s men would choke, something which afflicted the previous promotion-chasing Bluebirds team Bellamy played in, the Wales star said: This is a completely different side to the last one.

“We have a completely different mind set, the manager, the owners... it’s a completely different club.”

Bellamy, who has donned the skippers arm band recently with Mark Hudson out, does have his eyes fixed on the future, but reveals it is his own personal past that is helping fire him on today.

As a boy missed out on getting a Bluebirds shirt for Christmas when his Dad could not find one in the city.

His aim now is to make sure that does not happen to any other young supporters in the welsh capital and he believes that process is already very much underway.

At the opening of the Bluebirds’ ambitious new £2m House of Sport 2 development Bellamy outlined his personal vision for the future.

“This club just keeps growing. This isn’t it now. We do not just look back at where we were ten or 15 years ago and say, look where we are now,” said Bellamy.

“The next five to ten years we will look now to push this club on even further. The next five or ten years could just be incredible for us.

“We could really do something special. That is what drives me on. That is what gives me satisfaction at this football club.

“But we won’t forget those days in the past. We’ll look back at them, perhaps not always with fondness, but that is where we have come from after all.

“I do look back down the years and at what happened at the club. There were difficult times. That’s probably why I supported Liverpool as a kid because I could go into any shop in Cardiff and buy a Liverpool shirt.

“I couldn’t go and buy a Cardiff top. I remember at Christmas I asked my dad for a Cardiff top and he couldn’t go and buy one.

“Remember that shed outside Ninian Park? You couldn’t even get one in there. That was the reality then.

“That is already changing. You see so many young kids around the city with Cardiff shirts on now. You never saw that before. It was either Manchester United, Liverpool, there was Everton too. They were the clubs then and I feel that’s changing now.

“Imagine watching Cardiff playing Manchester United and you supported United. But now you can go and watch Cardiff in Cardiff against them then you'd go and support Cardiff.

“We are winning the young kids over. We are making an impact. Imagine supporting your home town club in the Premier League? ”

That dream does indeed get closer to reality for Malky Mackay and his Bluebirds with them currently sitting top of the Premier League a clear nine points ahead of Watford in third.

If the Cardiff had beaten Barnsley at home on Tuesday, promotion could have been achieved in the Welsh capital on Saturday against Nottingham Forest.

That was not to be after the Tykes grabbed an equaliser deep into added time. Bellamy insists he and his teammates quickly shrugged off the disappointment.

Indeed the visitors leveller might well have been a blow on the night, but surely achieved nothing more than a postponement of Mackay and his men’s elevation.

If things go their way this weekend, next Tuesday’s home clash with Charlton could be the moment when the heartbreak of recent campaigns is finally pit to bed..

Bellamy himself admits he finds it hard to even think about the idea of promotion right now.

“Some days you think about it and some days you don’t. Some days you just don’t want to think about promotion at all,” said Bellamy.

“Personally I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. It’s

difficult to talk about really because there is still so much hard work yet to be done.

“What is great is that I can look forward to going into work and meeting a bunch of players who are just concentrating on the next game.

“Who just keep working and training as hard as they have been. It’s just about preparing right. It’s so nice to be around a group like that. A group of level-headed individuals. who just want to do well.

“That attitude is probably the reason we have stayed top for so long. It’s just that mentally we are so strong.

“We had the disappointment of losing a late goal against Barnsley, but these things happen. After the game we were a little bit deflated, but it was only for a couple of minutes. Then the attitude was, well, we’ve got an extra point. That is the mentality we have.

“We are an extra point up on everyone else and now we just try and beat Nottingham Forest.”

For all the excitement and success, this season has also been one dogged by controversy for the Bluebirds thanks to Malaysian backer Vincent Tan’s controversial rebranding of the Bluebirds’s home shirt and badge.

A small number of supporters have stopped attending games all together whilst many others are unhappy with the changes.

Bellamy himself said he understands how supporters might be feeling, but insists football is in a constant state of flux.

And he believes, if the vision he has for his beloved Bluebirds is to be realised, then change is going to need to be embraced.

“Personally I miss Ninian Park, I really do. I would give anything to play at Ninian Park again,” added Bellamy.

“But football has to change and you have to keep improving. The club has to be kept pushing on and we needed a new stadium.

“We need a new training ground. There’s just so many things we still need.

"I understand some people don't want change. I see that, but it has to change. That's the reality and the business we are in. The game is a business.

"There's no two ways about it. If we want to give young kids the opportunity that we, as young kids, weren't fortunate enough to have then you have to go with it.

Can you think of a more inspirational person to have coaching youngsters. He gives his all on the pitch and talks so much sense off it.

As i posted on this forum back June 2011 - when i had that evening out with Bellers and a few old school friends -

Bellers always wanted to come back to CARDIFF CITY,when a Man City player on loan to us.

If ever the the words Never Judge A Book by it's cover - That is Bellers - The guy has such a great footballing brain.
His ideas .vision, plans, players, managers, future, fans, charity work were just some of the topics we spoke about.

I Said he would be back within 4 years back at Cardiff at the time, and had to read endless threads on here and other messageboards - why he went to Liverpool - IF only people knew the truth :!:

Craig Bellamy is a Bluebird and will take us up to the Prem' League with the rest of our great squad :ayatollah:

good on bellamy for that but I had a Cardiff kit when I was 10 and they used to sell the home kit in Giles sports on Caroline street and in the club shop .I am going back to say 1983 here but bellamy is right you just couldnt get a city top in many places and we still only sell em in the club shop that has to change.

Glad he came to us a passionate cardiff boy who wants to play for his home town club and a player of his quality is just brilliant good on him .

As for the rebrand then yea change needed to happen but not to the extent it did to change the home kit and badge has tarnished what has been an amazing season so far and will further tarnish any promotion party it just wont feel the same.

Keep it going bellas enjoy watching him play very passionate player and good to see. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I haven't seen any other club change colours or crest for an influx of foreign cash to gain promotion to the premier league.

Only just!!!

Also, we didn't HAVE to change. We could still have this success while wearing blue.
Only Mr. Tan wanted wanted to change for a variety of unproven reasons.

It also doesn't mean we have to embrace it, and it was only one rich man's personal decision.

It is not football that has changed our identity.

Yeah I understand the anti red and I don't believe anyone is really for it over blue, but the underlying message he was saying is that football is a business and all businesses need to change. Of that there can be no doubt.

But the last thing we need now is another rebrand thread :ayatollah:
