I went to Sears and bought one for $100 and used it for the next five holidays.

The rental companies want at least $200 for 2 weeks.

Take your own. I use a Garmin Nuvi and just order the latest North America maps SIM. I then sell the SIM on eBay when I get back and buy new again the following year.

. Use a map they said at the travel agent !! Use a fooking map i aint looked at one of them in 10 years. Its like advising someone to use a phonebox :laughing6:

Did you know that if you type "tw*t" into your satnav, it will lead you directly to Paxman/Roath Tragic's house.

It's done on the GPS on the iPhone, doesn't use data.
You can buy tomtom/ garmin with USA maps but thy are quite expensive. Or just buy a cheapo 1 while your out there. Rental companies do charge a lot for hire as others have said

The sat navs that you can get with the rental cars are good . Used Alamo twice and on both occasions found very good

Agree , with exception of inner city LA or San Fran could have probably made do without sat nav . Route / Death Valley area pretty much fool proof

I bought one over in Canada few years back as was struggling in city centres etc. paid equivalent of £90 British for it and used it for 3 weeks. Came home, put it on ebay and sold it for £94!! Hire car companies rip you off out there.

I got back from the states last week and did the same except I downloaded the Garmin Maps from a torrent site, cost me three quid for a micro SD card and served me well.
