Disappointing end to the game last night but a point gained

Wed Apr 10, 2013 7:09 am

Disappointing result last night because of the way the game finished with our missed chances, and defending to deep for the last 20 minutes.

Over all we played very well and should have been out of sight long before the flukey equaliser ping ponged its way into the area, and trickled over the line to leave everyone deflated with that horrible feeling we felt against stoke with that late goal that knocked us out of the play offs!

Shouldn’t blame the ref for the extra time he added although I must question if Mc naughton was down that long? He wasn’t defending the ball or fluffing the chances for us. Helgassun is also taking a lot of the blame but until he come on we hadn’t really created too many chances for all our possession and good play with only Bellamy chance in the first half standing out, I can’t recall too many more prior to Helgassun inclusion? Undoubtly Helgassun had a shocker in front of goal; with a header going wide, the one on one and the other chance after the one on one. He is not the only striker we’ve had who has missed one on ones, I very rarely rose out of my seat when I seen Chopra through one on one as invariably he would miss, but he was always held in high esteem. Clearly a man of Helgassun ability should put at least one of those chances away last night and he didn’t, but rather than suggest he is past it I personally think we should have started with him, and point to those missed chances that he hasn’t had a lot of football since the new year.

Mason is a talented youngster but in my opinion he plays better as a two or a late impact player with a tiring defence. With the quality of ball in the first 60 minutes being put in their box we needed a goal poacher an out and out striker personally I would have gone for the experience of helgassun but Gusteded also would have been a better option. You could imagine mason being put through for that chance one on one late on I am sure he would have slotted it away to make it safe.

One of the positive last night was for 70 minutes we played well just lacked that killer touch in front of goal. Some supporters are blaming the substitution of Kimbo as a reason for us to go into our shell and drop deep, but he had given the ball away 5 or 6 times on the bounce and had tired badly. Looking at the midfield at that time it was difficult to choose which one to bring off all of them had stopped pressing the ball and looked Knackered. Personally I would gone for Cowie over Whittingham not every one favourite player I know but with a tiring midfield we needed somebody to run around and put Barnsley under pressure Whittingham is not that sort of player.

I am sure Malky will make the necessary adjustments for Saturday and if Helgassun had put one of those chances away we would be talking about an inspired substitution. We haven’t had much luck last few weeks losing Hudson, Connelly, Campbell, and Noone all to injury has had an effect on performances and decision making over that period I am sure. Last night the experience players on the pitch should have worked out we were defending to deep for the last 20 minutes, and pushed our back four 10 yards up the field to deny Barnsley the space in our half!

Some big games coming up and I am thoroughly looking forward to the Forest game looks like it could be Burnley away as in 1987 as the game to do it, and it will be a good place to clinch it after what happened at Turf Moor 2 seasons ago. I predict 4 points from the next 2 games for us.

i think all will be well come saturday, we'll win and watofrd will lose, meaning they would have to win all 4 games, so keep the faith we are in a fantastic position 9 pts clear with 5 games to go... :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I thought the whole game changed as soon as we took Kimbo off and brought Whittingham on... Whitts just slows the game down so much and doesn't seem to offer much at the moment.

Great post Vince.

Why did Malky change a team when we were completely on top and pushing for a 2nd goal. Kim should have stayed on and maybe Noone could have come on. I think Malky was too confident of winning and was resting players for the next 2 games.
But im positive today as its 1 point closer to the premiership.
One win and I think it will be promotion as Watford will drop points.
Also we have been the best team in the championship by far so we should not fear burnley or hull away or any other team for that matter :ayatollah:
