I think you're right, but I think the whole issue of these silences needs to be looked at afresh.
Why have one for a Pope but not Mrs Thatcher for example.
I know we didn't have one for the Pope, but most clubs did, and I made a point of ringing up the club the day before our match to check if they were going to have one, as I wouldn't have gone if we'd had one.
My view is that they should be reserved for football figures only, as everything else is potentially divisive.

City till I die (unless they are holding a minute silence for someone I don't like)

Yeah, it is a contentious issue. Personally, I think a minute's silence should only be held on Armistice Day and for figures attached to the club with the decision over who deserves the silence being at the discretion of the club. Would save a lot of hassle. The September 11th silence and other major disaster silences seem a bit pointless because they are acts of respect that should be for private times or other occasions, not a football match. It would be similar to going to Tesco at opening time and having a minute's silence before entering the store.
Was it the minute's silence for Princess Margaret that was the most awful one we've had down the City in recent years. I remember that one getting booed by a lot of people.

Can't we have a minute's booing

If we held a minutes silence for that callous bitch i would spend it spewing my ring up
You might gather i wasn't a fan of Maggie

She's only been in hell for a day and already fired Hitler, Joe Stalin and Pol Pot for being too soft on those eternally damned. Idi Amin has also been reduced to tears and Satan is thinking of playing for the other side.
