EKSTRAND: “Looking Forward To It”

Swedish defender Joel Ekstrand says Watford’s record in big games gives the squad confidence going into the promotion clash against Cardiff

JOEL EKSTRAND says the Watford team are brimming with confidence after defeating promotion rivals Hull City at the KC Stadium on Tuesday night, and explained that the Hornets’ squad relish the opportunity to play in big games, ahead of the crunch match against Cardiff tomorrow afternoon.

“For me it was the biggest win this season,” he told the Watford Weekend Preview Show on Hornets Player. To go away in this game with the pressure we were under outside the squad, of course it’s a massive win. We’re so happy to have done it, and done it as a team. I think we have a team that likes to play the big games. We have always performed in the big games. All these last six games will be like finals, it will be tough. On Saturday the leaders Cardiff are coming, they are having a great season, so we need to do the things we did at Hull and get even better.”

Ekstrand also explained that the clean sheet on Humberside was the perfect response to the concession of three goals against Burnley four days earlier.

“Always when you keep clean sheets, you only have to score once to win. In recent games, we have been sloppy, we conceded goals that we normally don’t concede. To go away against Hull and keep a clean sheet and win the game was massive for us. It was the best thing that could happen.”

The Swedish international was keen to stress the importance of the role Hornets’ fans have played this season, and thinks the game will be all the better for a near-capacity crowd against Malky Mackay’s table topping Cardiff side tomorrow.

“For me, football is not football without the fans. The Watford fans have been great both home and away. To play in front
of a full house against Cardiff at this stage will make it a wonderful game to play."

They were average at Hull....Hull were not much better themselves. Yes they got the win but so did we away at Leicester.

All mind games again.

I went to Hull, we played well first half and shut up shop second, didn't even counter attack. On our day we are the best team in the league, our season didn't start til October remember. Still worried about the defence tomorrow though.

Every fan of every team in the league thinks that. How could you possibly know that unless you've watched every team in the league numerous times this season?
