" Malky backs rule change in wake of Watford loan furore "

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has refused to criticise promotion rivals Watford for their controversial loan policy - but the Bluebirds boss admits he is glad the rules are being change to prevent other clubs following suit.

Czech hotshot Matej Vydra, who has fired 22 goals for club and country this season, is one of 12 loan signings in Watford’s squad as a result of a policy that has been the subject of fierce criticism, most notably from Palace manager Ian Holloway, who accused the Hornets of having an unfair advantage on their Championship rivals.

Italian businessman Giampaolo Pozzo owns Watford, Udinese and Spanish club Granada and the Hornets have benefited enormously from the links between the clubs, with a raft of players being loaned from the Serie A side.

Under current Football League rules, Championship clubs are able to loan no more than four domestic players in a single season.

But there is no limit on overseas loans and Watford have exploited that loophole to their advantage.

Mackay said: “It’s simple, if it’s within the rules there’s absolutely no problems.

“I do think that most people think the rule should be changed though.

“If you’ve got an amount of loan players in your squad it should not matter if they are from a club in Britain or from a club abroad. It should be changed I think.

“But whilst Watford are playing within the rules there is no issue with it because they are not doing anything that anyone else can’t do.

“The fact is they have an owner that has three clubs and can pull players in is their business and it’s fine.”

The Football League have now changed the rules from next season, meaning no club will be able to do what Watford have done this season.

Despite the controversy, Bluebirds boss Mackay is not surprised Gianfranco Zola’s side have emerged as one of Cardiff’s main promotion rivals.

“The boy Vydra was 3m euros from Banik to Udinese so it’s not like they found him in the middle of nowhere,” Mackay said.

“There’s good players there. Players from La Liga and Serie A and there’s a lot of them.

“There’s a big squad there. You’d expect from all that you would find a team that could challenge at the top of the Championship.”

No club will now be able to do what Watford have done this season as the Football League have now put new rules in place.

I dont know where they got it from that the FL have changed the rules for next year, they have not yet? Any rule changes are to be discussed at the leagues agm. They may have a problem changing the rules regarding International loans and temporary transfers as it is only FIFA that can change this as it is one of there rules. The FL will need to be careful as FIFA want to change the FL loan system of emergency loans and loaning players outside the transfer windows

Not sure how much of a "furore" there has actually been. Two years ago when we had a few there was a right row.

Most of them were shit and all!!!!! :o

Holloway as a point though. Its not cheating because theyre not breaking any rules but its very dubious and against the spirit of the game.
If wed have benefitted from loads of loan signings id still be against it

"Malky refused to criticise" of course he did, he couldn't really criticise could he? He took all their best players :-)
Seriously though, It's not right. I didn't like it when Davey Jones did it with us at the end of his last season with us. Loans to complement your squad or cover injuries, or to take a player not wanted by their parent club, yes fine. But you shouldn't be allowed to field your first team made up of loan players. Also I wasn't aware the chairman owned two other clubs. There should be a rule regarding loaning players between clubs owned by same club. It obviously gives these clubs an advantage. Fair or unfair though I'm not sure.

Under FIFA rules Watford only have two Loanee's Chalobah from Chelsea and Briggs from Fulham anyone else is a temporary transfer, the chairman doesn't own the other two clubs. The Owner of Watford is Gino Pozzo his father Gianpaulo is the owner of Udinese. People say that what Watford is doing is against the spirit of the rules, well virtually every other team in the FL is is abusing the emergency loan system which was originally introduced to help teams with small squads cover for injuries and suspensions for one months, but now teams use it strenghten for promotion or relegation battles not in the spirit of the rules

holloway can't talk. he has "sold" a player who is still their star. they also used the sale money to bring in others and pay the wages.
there's loads of rules that need to be changed but until they are, nobody can moan as all have the opportunity to benefit
