Smoke Bombs & Flares

Thu Apr 04, 2013 12:23 pm

Since some of our fans let off smoke bombs at P'Boro and threw them on the pitch there has been uproar from other supporters calling them idiots and praying they are banned for life.

However I disagree. Being a Cardiff fan living in Cornwall, the closest professional team for me is Argyle. I went to the derby match against Exeter on Saturday and there were smoke bombs let off before and after the game. Before the game there was a green smoke bomb that was left just behind me. The atmosphere was beginning to pick about 15mins before kick off. Just as the teams were coming out this smoke bomb was let off and the atmosphere all of a sudden was electric. it wasn't thrown at anyone and not used in any sort of hooligan way. It increased the atmosphere and the police were none the wiser. After the game there was a smoke bomb let off at the other end of the ground by the Plymouth fans and again nothing happened.

My point is if smoke bombs or flares are let off purely to get the crowd going and the atmosphere rocking then what is the problem. Look at foreign fans and how well it works. If they were let off purely to been thrown at officials, players or opposing fans, then that is a different matter. Obviously when one of these is let off police will stand by you, however if they see that you have no intention to harm anyone, but just want to increase the atmosphere then there should be no action taken against you.

I agree, there was no uproar when we let them off at Sheffield Wednesday a few weeks ago,

However If idiots throw them on to the pitch or at people then its too far.

I was with my lad at Shrewsbury last season, some clown without warning let one off right in front of us. The smoke was acrid, I had to pull my lad away, coughing and spluttering with his eyes streaming. Not a great experience to be honest. I don't know if they can police them in certain areas or something, but as for every Tom, Dick and Harry bringing them in on their own and letting them off when they feel like, no thanks.

Excellent point which the OP appears to have missed.

These smoke bombs can seriously affect children and those with respiratory problems and should not be let off in the wrong environment.

When people take their children to a match they don't go expecting a smoke bomb to be let off in their faces.

It could not be safely controlled in any stadium as it only takes 1 idiot, as in P'boro, to disgrace the club and its supporters.

Why would you ever need a flare or smoke bomb to get you up for the game?!?!

I have never woken up on the day of the game and thought I'd better make sure I take my flare to the game today, or I hope someone sets them off. If you can't get up for it with the buzz of knowing the games coming up I'd suggest you may have the wrong pastime.

Without wanting to sound like an old fart I agree with the boys above.

These smoke bombs are dangerous in the wrong hands and not for confined spaces or in the middle of crowds of people.

Thankfully the majority of City fans and the authorities don't want these smoke bombs in our stadia. So dream on kiddiewinks it's not going to be allowed, ever!

on the plus side though i bet you were glad to get out of there with what was happening on the pitch  on a serious note though they should not be allowed in stadia full stop and a banning order should be given to anyone caught with one.

Just don't get why some thinks smoke bomb will increase atmosphere!

They are so harmless the muppet holding it aloft on Saturday could only hold it for about 10 seconds before he flung it into the front of the terrace where all the kids were.

I don't think the few hundred of us coughing and spluttering in the Sheffield Wednesday concourse may disagree, also witnessing that poor chap getting killed by a flare in the Arms Park, may also have given me a negative outlook.

It has it's advantages and negatives. If you put a gas mask under every seat then I could see it working in sensible fashion.

I would point out that it is illegal to take smoke bombs and flares into football grounds and also let them off. Not sure how the Hertfordshire police view it but is it worth the risk of getting nicked
