Anyone remember a good old relegation dog fight?

Wed Apr 03, 2013 12:24 pm

I bet a lot on here can't remember a relegation dog fight. We havent been in one for years.Remember sam hamman saying " i dont do relegation"? Like him or loath him thank feck we havent been in one since.

What will our fan base be like if we're in one next season? There was radio coverage dug up a couple of months ago about the atmosphere at an away game from a few years back when city were down to eight men and held out for a draw when city were in a relegation fight, I don't know what game it was but the city support sounded brilliant.

I know it's not the time to be negative but my first season as a kid we escaped the drop with a game or two to spare in a night game when I think richie morgan or frank burrows was manager, the atmosphere was electric, I think we scaped a draw, all the fans waited outside front of ninian park after the game for the players to come out, as I was just a kid I climed up on the gates to get a look. Phil Dwyer come out and put me on his shoulders,I was we'll chuffed.

It was a fecking great night.

Some of my greatest memories of city are when we were fighting relegation.

Making new ones now on the other side of the fence.

My 1st relegation was in 1982. Was only 9 at the time and was disappointed but it didnt hurt. The next relegations were in Durban days from 2nd to 4th. Truly awful experience. There have been 3 or 4 others in my time. The last one was 2000 and i remember listening to us being steam rollered by Gillingham after Andy Legg was harshly sent off. Since then it has been pretty good all the way through till this season.

Hopefully we will go up and survive in premier league.

The Durban days were poor. Did he say " if you want entertainment go to the circus"?

Our last home game of the 1977 season, we needed a result v Carlisle & we drew 1-1 to stay up in the old second division, sending them down on goal difference.

Our last home game of the 1973/74 season against Crystal Palace and a 1-1 draw to see us safe and send Palace down. Great goal by Tony Villars that night and a fantastic atmosphere made it a night to remember.

Malcolm Allison being the Palace manager helped as well. :D

In the 1972/73 season we escaped relegation by .10 of a goal on goal average. In the last game of the season we lost 2-0 at home against Hull, and Huddersfield who were fighting us for the final relegation place won 2-0 at home against Portsmouth.

Everyone was bricking it when we were losing but we managed to escape that year.

We were sort of involved in one in under Lenny Lawrence the year we sold Gabbidon werent we? Not right in it but we were at the wrong end of the table most of the season. Or perhaps it was the year Jones took over?

I'm sure it was the year jones took over. I remember going to Plymouth and us getting a priceless 1-0 win that helped us stay up. Think it was 2005.

2004/05 season in or around the relegation places for most of the season but only actually in the relegation places for 8 weeks.

Jobi Macnuff settled the nerves with the winner in the last match against QPR but your right we could have got dragged into it, but only if we lost by 20+ goals in the last match. :o

As things turned out we already had enough points in the bag before the game started.
