I made a spreadsheet to track our promotion push and based on the data (sorry to be Captain Obvious) this is a big week for City. If Watford are beaten by Hull tomorrow and we win at Vicarage road on the weekend, we will only need 5 points from the remaining 6 matches (18 available). Watford have struggled as of late averaging only 1 point/match over the past 5 matches so losing 2 on the trot is certainly possible.
In the US when we discuss baseball teams reaching the playoffs we use the term "magic number" for the points total necessary to guarantee that a team reaches the playoffs. Neglecting goal difference, our magic number is 89 pts for promotion and 93 to guarantee we go up as champions (21 points to play for).
Also of note is that after today's results, 3 more teams are mathematically unable to catch us. Leaving a chasing pack of 5 teams that could reach our current points total. We are now guaranteed a playoff place, although I don't think we'll need it.
There is a bunch of other data in the spreadsheet that helps calm me down on match days, but these are some of the key findings this week. I've been followed City for long enough to know to expect the ridiculous and I remember the pain of losing out on the playoffs on goal difference after that 6-0 loss at Preston, but dare I say, I'm starting to believe this is the year.
