Been thinking of getting one for a while, and seeing as I already have an iPod touch and iMac, the iPad seems to be the logical choice, but I was just wondering what others on here have and whether there are other options besides Apple?

Depends what you are after. I had the Ipad 2, but gave it to my younger sis last summer as it was just a expensive portable dvd/skype and google device.
The windows tablet is supposed to be pretty good, as is the nexus.
Still use the mrs ipad 2 but dont see the fuss in getting an ipad 3 or mini.

iPad 2 - had one, gave it to my mum - overhyped, expensive and locked down - can jailbreak but why when other tablets on the market? No flash either which was annoying considering its still a well used technology even though it was supposed to have died years ago.
Nexus 7 - Good value - open and not restricted - probably your best option
Kindle Fire HD - What I currently have as its basically an Android Tablet (slightly modified OS) that has the Kindle Reader built into it which is great for my university books and stuff/programming code sheets that I can just download straight on to it.
I wouldn't go for an iPad personally. Been there and I don't see the hype. Its up to you really out of the Nexus 7 and Fire HD whether you want it purely as an open tablet or whether you want the reading ability as well. They're both considerably cheaper than the iPad as well.
Many are quick to dismiss the Kindle Fire HD as just another one of Amazons e-readers but it does everything I need and is more functional than an iPad. If you want a tablet for games then buy an iPad as the app store is cluttered with them thanks to kids wanting an iPad and developers creating games such as Angry Birds in the masses to cash in. i.e. supply and demand.
The Kindle Fire HD also has gorilla grass, dual antenna and is full HD unlike the Nexus 7. The Kindle Fire HD is currently winning sales trends as Amazon seem to have it all nailed on: good price - the Amazon prime streaming service - sufficient apps - the kindle store and books - etc. The Kindle Fire HD outsold the iPad mini at a ratio of 2:1 on launch and is now still outselling it.
And im an Apple fanboy with an iPhone and Macbook Pro but the Kindle Fire HD wins the tablet war for me

OK, cheers for that - I'll be bearing it in mind. Just one question - the AppleCare Protection Plan, is there much point in getting it for the iPad? When I bought my iMac, I got the AppleCare Protection Plan to go with it, but I don't think I'll ever need it. I think I probably bought it more out of peace of mind than anything.

No, its a rip off. You are covered by shop receipt warranty anyway under consumer law. This will cover you for 3 years no matter what the shop initially say.

My daughter wants iPad mini £269, I suggested nexus 7 £159 but now we've seen Samsung galaxy tab 2 £250. Any recommendations? I think iPad mini is way too expensive for a 7" tablet.

Im lucky that i get mine at US prices without VAT so the IPad 2 when it was new wasnt to bad. But it depends really on what your daughter wants. The Ipad mini is prob more fashionable but the galaxy 2 is supposed to be pretty good.

I recently bought an iPad 4 whilst on holiday in the US, but that was because I'd saved the money from Xmas and knew I was going there. The basic wi-fi version there worked out at around £340 instead of the £399 it would cost here.
If I hadn't been going there I don't think I would have bothered and just gone with the Kindle fire HD.
The picture quality is excellent on the iPad, and I use it for a back up of watching SKY sports when the missus wants the big telly. Its also very good to display digital photos.

I dont think we would upgrade our ipad 2 unless it breaks. We dont use it for anything fancy, its for skype, internet and watching films. Came in handy when the wife was still working in the UK and i was out here. Alot of cash for what they actually are used for really.

I'm a bit of a novice, but must say that I am very happy with my iPad mini. £269 I think it was.

I paid £129 for a Blackberry Playbook for the wife and she loves it.
