MALKY: Whittingham needed rest

Mon Apr 01, 2013 9:02 pm

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay admitted star midfielder Peter Whittingham needed a rest after leaving him out of his side for the 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Mackay left Whittingham on the bench for the first time this season after previously resisting calls to give the out-of-sorts play-maker time out of the first team.

Jordon Mutch and Kim Bo-Kyung were both highly impressive on rare starts for the Bluebirds, helping Mackay's men produce one of their finest performances of the season just two days after slumping to defeat at Peterborough. And the manager was full of admiration for his team, with Mutch in particular earning special praise.

"Blackburn had a highly experienced front six and we knew if we didn't press them from the start they could cause us problems," he said. We set the right tempo immediately and had 18 shots on target before Fraizer Campbell gave us the lead. This was our 15th clean sheet of the season and a match in which we dominated from start to finish, which doesn't happen too often.

Hope he stays on the bench to be honest. Whitts seems to have lost confidence. :ayatollah:

not happy where he is playing, and to be honest,he is not strong enough to play in front of back 4,maybe the penalty will boost his confidence :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I think the dominant performance was more down to the 5 man midfield than dropping whits. I think any 2 out of whits, kim and mutch would have been good in forward mid role today. Whits was good when he came on!

Yes, ironically the change in formation would have benefitted Whitts :ayatollah:

Interesting selection ahead for Saturday, a lot will depend if Campbell is OK as he certainly limped off and was limping around the centre circle as the players applauded the crowd at the end.

Shouldnt start next week. Stick with Mutch and Kim who were outstanding yesterday. :ayatollah:

I'd start with him against Watford, instead of Mutch. Not effective enough playing behind he back four
