With most smartphones you can create a mobile hotspot and use your laptop to connect to the Internet.

I use a mobile hotspot on my blackberry to give Internet to my kindle to download books when I'm travelling.

Go into your Internet/wifi settings, or google it for your phone. Don't have an iPhone sorry.

On iPhone select settings then personal hotspot . Switch it on. Then on your iPad or laptop go to wifi and search for your personal hotspot and select. Remember though you will beau paying for the data download on your mobile phone so check your contract and don't do it abroad unless you've won the lottery!
