Malky angry over Easter fixture congestion

Sat Mar 30, 2013 12:30 am

Malky Mackay has hit out at the Easter weekend fixture schedule claiming it puts his Cardiff City side at a disadvantage.

The furious Bluebirds boss branded it "bizarre" that his table-toppers must play two games in three days whilst Cardiff’s main rivals have their matches more spread out.

Cardiff travel to Peterborough today and then entertain Blackburn in the Welsh capital on Easter Monday.

Mackay is unhappy that the Bluebirds’ main promotion rivals have been given extra time to rest their players over what is often seen as a make or break Easter programme.

Watford were at home to Burnley last night and don’t play again until Tuesday evening when they meet Hull.

Steve Bruce’s Tigers do play today, but have an extra 24 hours to recover before hosting Watford.

Crystal Palace were in action last night against Birmingham, again being afforded extra time to recover before travelling to Blackpool on Monday.

Leicester also have an extra day with only Nottingham Forest of the promotion pushers following the same schedule as the Bluebirds.

Mackay and his men have nine games left to secure promotion to the top-flight with seven of those fixtures coming in a packed April schedule.

Mackay said of the Easter scheduling: “I think that’s bizarre considering where we are in the season. If we have to play two games in three days then everybody should have to do that. I know about the television rights and that, but at this stage of the season I really do think that gives an unfair advantage to other teams. It is a very busy period right and I note that we are playing Saturday and Monday for some reason when there are other clubs playing Friday and Tuesday.”

After his two games with Wales, Mackay must decide if Craig Bellamy is able to play in two Championship encounters in quick succession. The Bluebirds have also been hit by the news that skipper Mark Hudson is out for the rest of the season.

The centre-half had surgery on an ankle problem yesterday.
Mackay said: "I will never say no to anything, but Mark will probably not play again this season. It's a blow for the player, he's been a top performer for us and, as our captain, Mark is one of our leaders. But he's still here, in the dressing room to help out, even though he won't be playing."

All games should have been like other weeks where they fall on Saturday and Tuesday.

I remember Malky complaining about the same thing last year when our opponents on the Monday were Watford who had played their home game on the Friday.

I'm just surprised that we didn't re-arrange the Blackburn game to Tuesday, especially after what Malky said last year and again yesterday.

Oh well, let the cream stay at the top.

I truly believe that with our Midfield and striker's it won't be a problem.
My worry is if we get a defender injured or Red card.

This is why it help when you occasionally apply some squad rotation.

Rest bellers and Whitts and play Kim and Noone
Then revert back for Mondays game.
Same for a few other players also.
Pointless having the depth if you only gonna swim on the surface water.

I watched his interview and to describe him as "Furious" is utter bollocks.

If that was Malkay being furious I wouldn't want to be around when he really gets mad. :o

My point exactly. Three months ago he was publicly bragging of our strength in depth. Now, it would seem, he has put on his Dave Jones jacket,,& is moaning & making all sorts of excuses.

To be honest, we had a massive break and when we came back we weren't firing on all cylinders at all. Maybe a good run of games will wake them up.
