Nigel Adkins vows to save Reading from relegation and has no hard feelings after Southampton exit
If new Reading manager Nigel Adkins did not want to talk about the past, he was not particularly keen on talking about the future either. All that mattered to him was the eight games that will determine whether he remains a Premier League manager.

There were the two-hour walks. “St Catherine’s Hill in Winchester. There are 330 steps to climb up the hill and you can see the whole of Winchester. You have to dodge the cows on the way up.”

Then there was dinner with Jonny Wilkinson. “I wanted to see the mindset of top players. I’m a massive rugby man. I also met some rugby coaches as well — it was great to speak with Andy Robinson about the concepts of building a team.”

Then there was the week in Hamburg. “They were very hospitable. You’ve got Frank Arnesen and Lee Congleton there. I got full access, I saw all the training, how they operate. You’re always looking to learn.”

Nigel Adkins kept himself busy during his 66 days in the wilderness since being sacked by Southampton. At the time, the consensus was that he would have to drop down to the Championship to secure a new job. As he was unveiled on Monday as the new manager of Reading , who lie seven points adrift of safety with eight games remaining, the suspicion is he has done it the other way round.

It is understood that he initially had no intention of taking the Reading job, which became available two weeks ago when Brian McDermott was sacked.
