Ashley Williams

Jack/English or not he's a great captain and an honorary Welshman in my eyes.

Good defender yes but disagree with this. I can't feel myself feeling proud watching Wales when he is leading out the team before kick off.

He took the easy opition and played for Wales just so he could play international Football becauses he not good enough for England.

The reason we have a player of a different nationality is the reason I am boycotting Wales sadly.

We would certainly be worse off without him, we're not exactly flush with quality centre halves at the moment.

As you've done for the last 25 odd years when Wales have had players who weren't born in Wales playing I assume?

13 out of the 25 are English born. Like it or not if we had to pick a starting 11 from Wales we'd not have beaten Scotland tonight, end off. Jonathan Williams who made his debut tonight and played outstanding is from Kent, did he and all the other players take the easy option?

Robert Earnshaw is a prime example of great Welsh players born away from these shores, the Zambian prince. Played with great passion for Wales as does Williams. You can see he cares about Wales when he's interviewed after games.

Followed Wales for 7/8 years now and also I have said in other threads I manage to just about accept theres rules allowing them to play for us.

I would prefer the opition of parent rule and nothing else.

But a captain who ent properly Welsh is a step to far from me but the Welsh FA insist on a Welsh manager constantally.

I'd rather see us with all Welsh players including ones who ent born Welsh but allowed to due to having a parent.

It would go for Earnshaw aswell if he was ever captain I wouldn't turn up.

I haven't had second thoughts after deciding to boycott Wales and I wish it would change soon.

I had money for home games and was planning to go Scotland but didn't because of boycott.

I have stuck to it ever since and people have showed a lot of respect to sticking to it.

What anyone says on it I won't change my mind. :ayatollah:

I guess you'd rather have Giggs as captain then despite the fact he showed nothing but distain for the fact he was Welsh and only turned up when he fancied it?

But he was Welsh born so that's ok.

Off course I respect you for sticking to your guns, I wish those who are opposing the rebrand so viciously would not renew their ST and stick to the their morals.

Watch Williams when he plays for Wales and he play with more passion than most of the Welsh boys. We'd be fucked without them sadly and that's how it is.

He didn't turn up enough to be a captain to be fair.

But then again he made of 50 appearances so the way people make it out is quite poor.

He did turn up and people over exgearate however you spell it.

In fairness he shows a lot of passion. But it will never change the fact for me and he has been brilliant for Wales and he would be missed in a game.

He has done well this season with his club and country.

I have watched Wales games since the boycott and not sad enough to wish them to lose.

If Giggs really gave a toss about Wales he would have had far more than 50 caps. This is a man who has played 1000 times for one club.

A quality defender and a good leader.

Id prefer 11 Welshmen but whilst everyonelse is flouting the rules, including the top countries, then why shouldnt we.

The ironic thing is Williams had he decided to stick with England would probably be in their team last night.

Why is it assumed he'd prefer to play for England? Giggs had the chance to and decided not to, Jon Williams tonight knew he'd have a great chance in the future but decided not to.

Re: Ashley Williams

I think the main issue is he is a Jack. But even though we hate each other we have always supported Wales when it mattered. Williams was quality last night. We may not like him but we have to respect him when he pulls on the red shirt of Wales.

Of course that's the reason. Same as why people don't like Coleman.

Nobody complained when Vinny Jones was captain or when Earnshaw got given the captaincy, who clearly wasn't even born on this continent.

Re: Ashley Williams

Sat Mar 23, 2013 7:09 am

The only reason that Ashley Williams gets so much stick for being English is because he's a Jack. I know he's captain, but if your Welsh enough to play for Wales then you should be Welsh enough to captain Wales.

Here's the players that weren't born in Wales (the majority of the squad 13/25), players in bold featured for Wales yesterday (the majority of those that played, 8/14)

Boaz Myhill (California), Qualifies through a UK passport (previously turned down the chance to play for Wales)
Lewis Price (Bournemouth), Qualifies through parent

Sam Ricketts (Aylesbury), Qualifies through grandparent
Ashley Williams (Wolverhampton), Qualifies through grandparent

Joel Lynch (Eastbourne), Qualifies through parent
Lewin Nyatanga (Burton), Qualifies through parent

Jack Collison (Watford), Qualifies through grandparent
Andy King (Devon), Qualifies through grandparent
Jon Williams (Kent), Qualifies through parent
Robson-Kanu (London), Qualifies through grandparent

Simon Church (Amersham), Qualifies through grandparent
Steve Morison (London), Qualifies through grandparent
Sam Vokes (Southampton), Qualifies through grandparent

Ultimately, I'd be very surprised if any of the above would chose to play for Wales over England if they were good enough to play for England. The rules are what they are, and Williams is just one of eight players who qualified through a Welsh grandparent. Ultimately if you've got a problem with the majority of the squad not being Welsh, or with 8/25 qualifiying through a grandparent then you shouldn't really be supporting Wales. If you're happy to support them, then you should support players regardless of how they qualified to play for the nation.

If we only picked players born in Wales, this would have been our team and we'd have lost:

--------------------------Fon Williams------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------
----Richards------Gunter-------Collins--------Davies---
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------Ledley--------Ramsey----Vaughan-----------
------------------------------------------------------------------
--------Bale---------------Easter----------Bellamy--------

Agreed, there's a lot of players who are born in Wales and never put in commitment. There are some who are born in England and also weren't committed.

Ashley Williams is fully committed, and has not pulled out of a Welsh squad due to injury. He is a great captain for Wales, the best we've had in a very long time and it's a shame that some of you put your anti Swansea allegiance before recognizing this.

Re: Ashley Williams

Obviously I'd prefer it if all our players were born in Wales and if not at least their parents were Welsh. However whilst the rules are as they are, then we must try to get the best players we can like every other country. I will always support players who give their all for Wales and without doubt Williams does that.

I thought Williams was outstanding yesterday in a very good welsh defensive performance. I thought Sam Ricketts alongside Williams bar one mistake for the goal was also very good and I don't have the same fears about him as I do Collins. I must say the full backs were good defensively however they contributed so much to our attacking play. I think Swansea in Ben Davies have found an excellent prospect who will be a mainstay of the Welsh team for a number of years.

Giggs never had the chance to play for England as he had no qualifying criteria.
