Icelandic midfielder Aron Gunnarsson has signed a two-year contract extension at Cardiff City - keeping him at the club until 2016.

The 23-year-old former Coventry City man has made a big impact since Malky Mackay brought him to the Cardiff City Stadium last season and he has now been rewarded with a new deal.

Mackay has now shown his intent to keep the Scandinavian hardman in his squad - even if their Premier League dream is realised this season.

Thirty three times capped Gunnarsson is currently on international duty with Iceland and will face Slovenia in a crunch World Cup qualification Group E clash in Ljubljana on Friday night.

But it is his strong performances in the Bluebirds engine room this season that have shown his value and seen the tough tackler with a mighty throw make 36 appearances, standing alongside Peter Whittingham as Cardiff City's most used outfield player.

After a steady start to his career in South Wales, the former AZ Alkmaar man has proved his worth this season with an impressive contribution of seven goals and four assists that has endeared the second top scorer to the Cardiff faithful and convinced his manager to put a new deal on the table.

A statement on the club's official site said: "Cardiff City Football Club are pleased to confirm that Aron Gunnarsson has signed a two year contract extension until 2016.

I think he actually could.

He was chased by Premier League clubs and Seville?

Also he is a tank and will bust a gut.

Everyone saying we need a tough midfield and a work horse and we have one right here. He's only 23 and will be a lynchpin in our midfield in the Premier League. Full of passion and desire, always remember him v Liverpool pushing himself at 110% despite being full up of cramp.

Excellent decision!

Tremendous player, still young and deserves to be given a new contract, will be good enough if we reach the premiership. :ayatollah:

One of the only current midfielders who I think would be good enough for not only Premier League football, but to maintain a place in the starting XI. Very good news. I can't wait to see him develop as a player.

Midfielder Aron Gunnarsson signs new contract with Cardiff

Midfielder Aron Gunnarsson has signed a two-year contract extension to stay with Cardiff City until 2016.

The Icelandic international signed for the Bluebirds from Coventry City in the summer of 2011.

Gunnarsson has established himself as a regular in Cardiff's side, missing only one league game this season.

The 23-year-old began his career in his native Iceland before switching to top flight Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar in 2006 and then Coventry two years later.

Gunnarsson is on international duty with Iceland this week ahead of their World Cup 2014 group E qualifier in Slovenia on Friday.
