Is this a True Story???

Sun Mar 17, 2013 2:33 pm

One of our fixture for the season of 1976/77 had us originally to play Bolton Wanderers away on Saturday 19 March 1977, however while our fan were on route, the game was called off (not sure of the reason why),,,leaving a few hundred City fans who had arrived in the Manchester area by this time looking for something to do.

This problem was solved by our lads turning up at a Division 4 Rochdale v Workington game being played not far away.

The City fans, being as we were "away" supported the Workington team, who dually won the game. The Workington players, in appreciation of their unexpected & vociferous support, came over after the final whistle & applauded all the City fans who were there.

Can any one confirm this story? Were you one of the City lads at Rochdale that day??

Out of interest, the Bolton away fixture was later rescheduled for May 10 1977, our last away game of that season, which we lost 1-2 (Buchanan).

You have'nt got all the story there Rick as Workington who were bottom of the league but won 3-0 that day.

Later that season me and a couple of mates were on a course in Southport when they played Colchester at home. Colchester were going for promotion and were being chased by the Jacks. We managed to talk about a dozen people on the course to go to the game and support Colchester.

Crowd was only about 800 that night but the dozen of us were giving Colchester manic support and they won the game 3-1. They came over and thanked us after the game.

Fecking crazy times but shows you what a bit of NOISE can do.

I was told the story from a friend at school school (i was fifteen at the time) who was at this game, & gave me the match programme, which i still have.

I was living in Caerphilly at the time.

Another interesting fact is that Jimmy Mullen had just signed for Rochdale, at that time.

Its a great (& factual) story.

A couple of weeks later we played Southampton away (April 11), & this was my first City away game.
