Help needed: how to be a Cardiff City fan

Sun Mar 17, 2013 2:41 am

I'm a massive Gooner (follow home and away, my local professional club, blabla). But I'm sure you know how us Arsenal fans like to moan, and aside from all the 'Wenger Out' politics the tickets are pretty damn expensive. Most of my family is Cardiff-based, so assuming they (we!) are in the Prem next season I'd like to become a Cardiff fan; for the sake of being an active home/away Premier League fan at a lower cost (lower home tickets, would be Category C tickets for most away games etc).

Basically, I need to find out pretty much everything about this club.

Who are the stand out players (Gunnarsson, Whittingham, Connolly, Helguson come to mind)?
Since the re-branding, how are relations between fans and higher-ups?
What are the best (/most common) away fan chants (assume there's less chanting at home, maybe just an Arsenal thing)?
Rivals (Swansea of course, but heard something about QPR)?
Money-wise? Owners have changed the club, but does that come with money worthy of the top division?
Helguson's 35, if you (we!) stay up next season who will that rely upon?
Notable fans (not necessarily famous fans, just people to look out for on away trips)?
How's the academy (had some cousins in it, so can't be great :P)?
The stadium; ultras, notable spots etc?
If I'm buying a replica shirt, am I right in assuming people still buy the blue away shirt, or have fans assimilated into red?

All info would be extremely helpful! Not just changing clubs by any means, but seems to me like a healthy protest against our rocketing prices.

its a strange time to start supporting cardiff because there is a split between the fans atm due to the rebranding .... most fans aint that bothered but as your about to find out, this board is full of keep cardiff blue .... but believe me 90% of supporters happily took the free red scarf offered during a mid-week game and wore it around their necks .... i was one .... but fair plays on your stanch against arsenals shocking ticket prices :ayatollah:

As wind ups go that's a very poor effort, must try harder. It was a wind up right? Because if it wasn't you have some real issues. :laughing6:

Yes there is a split and some fans tell lies also. A bit like you stating that most fans aint bothered about the rebranding. Wake up sunshine. :ayatollah:

Yeah its a wind up, i am laughing right now ! How my club has changed, lost its soul, how we all sit there nice and neat clapping a jolly good pass, lost our passion and fight.

And most importantly, how the club as a whole aint all singing and dancing at the position we are in.

If this would have happened 10 years ago, the whole city would have been buzzing.

Right, erm, it wasn't a wind-up. Not going to go into Arsenal too much, but essentially with fans like myself continuing to vote with our feet the prices will continue to rise, which isn't justifiable given our performance.

I've always (weakly) supported Cardiff, but it's obviously pretty difficult to follow two teams away. Would still count Arsenal as a first team, but thought a group of (basically) newly-promoted Premiership fans would welcome additional money/support coming into the club...

Unfortunately most of my Cardiff family are Manchester United fans (typical...) but I'll hopefully be going to most away matches and the odd home game next season.

Not a wind-up, never visited these forums before, etc. Genuinely looking for a good place to start :P

Who are the stand out players (Gunnarsson, Whittingham, Connolly, Helguson come to mind)?
- Campbell, Bellamy, Whittingham, Hudson... a few of the stand out players.
Since the re-branding, how are relations between fans and higher-ups?
- There's a big divide within the fans, there are lots of different opinions (positive/negative) when it comes to the rebrand and Vincent Tan.
What are the best (/most common) away fan chants (assume there's less chanting at home, maybe just an Arsenal thing)?
- Our chants are easy to pick up.
Rivals (Swansea of course, but heard something about QPR)?
- Our main rivals are Swansea City. We're also rivals with Bristol City but to a much lesser extent.
Money-wise? Owners have changed the club, but does that come with money worthy of the top division?
- Who knows.
Helguson's 35, if you (we!) stay up next season who will that rely upon?
- We don't rely upon Helguson anyway. We'll buy new players and add to our squad.
Notable fans (not necessarily famous fans, just people to look out for on away trips)?
- Dai Hunt.
How's the academy (had some cousins in it, so can't be great :P)?
- Our academy has always been decent.
The stadium; ultras, notable spots etc?
- We don't have any "ultras" but we have a singing section in the Canton Stand (behind the goal) and we have fans who sing in the Ninian next to the away fans.
If I'm buying a replica shirt, am I right in assuming people still buy the blue away shirt, or have fans assimilated into red?
- If you're going to buy a Cardiff shirt, buy a blue shirt, stay away from the red.

Where's your loyalty???

Re: Help needed: how to be a Cardiff City fan

Who are the stand out players (Gunnarsson, Whittingham, Connolly, Helguson come to mind)?
Hudson

Since the re-branding, how are relations between fans and higher-ups?
Very distanced, TG the original shareholder has left, we shared a good relationship with him now he's gone, it's Tan at games who has only just started coming this season.

What are the best (/most common) away fan chants (assume there's less chanting at home, maybe just an Arsenal thing)?
You'll never notice how much I love you

Rivals (Swansea of course, but heard something about QPR)?
Swansea, Bristol City, Leeds.
Money-wise? Owners have changed the club, but does that come with money worthy of the top division?
We're alright, we're still in debt but could be sorted out if promoted.

Helguson's 35, if you (we!) stay up next season who will that rely upon?
His contract runs out next season.

Notable fans (not necessarily famous fans, just people to look out for on away trips)?
Dai Hunt for home games, away there's not really any standouts

How's the academy (had some cousins in it, so can't be great )?
Used to be shite, we used to let great players slip through and go onto bigger things but Malky loves the academy set up and pays a close eye
The stadium; ultras, notable spots etc?
Canton Stand
If I'm buying a replica shirt, am I right in assuming people still buy the blue away shirt, or have fans assimilated into red?
Buy what you want, people brand people who buy the red shirt as sell outs, yet wouldn't dare say it in the ground

All info would be extremely helpful! Not just changing clubs by any means, but seems to me like a healthy protest against our rocketing prices.

Brilliant, thanks to the people that posted properly :P

Think I recognise Canton/Grange as areas in Cardiff? Why them specifically? Ninian is obvious, is there a story behind Grandstand or is that simply where players come out etc?

As for loyalty to Arsenal, I'd still be an Arsenal fan first, Cardiff second. But when we have £99m of available cash not being used, and yet have the cheek for two of my tickets this season to together cost just a little less than a Cardiff season ticket, I'm sure you can begin to understand. It's a protest vote more than anything, but still I'd love to get properly involved with Cardiff. Put it this way, assuming I go to Tottenham away with Cardiff, I'll still be booing a certain Gareth Bale :)

No thanks. There's plenty of loyal fans who'd I'd prefer the ticket to go to.

Mate I was responding to the original post.  I really can't be bothered with people getting all emotional any more, looking for arguments where they don't exist. Like I said it was the op but get all upset if you want.

Thanks for the "don't want you at our club" stuff boys, but alas that's not the question I'm asking. That's already decided, not taking votes on it! Simply asking what the club is all about and getting involved etc.

Just as irrelevant as before...

I wouldn't be buying a season ticket, I'd be going for an away membership, and going with a cousin to the odd home match.

You'll be lucky to get 1 away ticket all season tbh.

We were a great club to support. Now we've changed to red which have lead to a divide amongst fans and dire home atmospheres. Stay at arsenal's your best bet.
