Former City star Bothroyd “They will go up"

Fri Mar 15, 2013 10:30 pm

JAY Bothroyd is backing Cardiff City to win at Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow – and go on to secure their place in the Premier League.

Former Bluebirds striker Bothroyd believes Malky Mackay’s team can at last deliver promotion.

“They will go up and I’d love to see that,” says Bothroyd. “I enjoyed playing for Cardiff and had a good rapport with the fans.

“They deserve to see their team earn promotion. Craig Bellamy is a big part of their team, which he was a couple of seasons ago when I was there. I have a lot of respect for him.

“He could have signed for a number of Premier League clubs, but wanted to play for his hometown team. He is focused on making sure they achieve their aim.

“Bellers is without doubt one of the best strikers I have played alongside in my career.”

That’s a huge compliment to Bellamy from Bothroyd, who has played for England and is currently helping Harry Redknapp’s QPR in their battle for Premier survival.

“Cardiff are going up,” added Bothroyd.

“They have a manager, Malky Mackay, who knows Championship football and has the financial backing needed. He has recruited quality players, experienced players and they have a great chance. I firmly believe they will do it.

“Cardiff have been up there challenging for promotion for a few years now and this is their time. I felt we were unlucky not to go up when I was there, but back then we only had 13 or 14 players ready to step in and not the 20 or so needed in a squad.

“Dave Jones deserved credit for the work he did in Cardiff and Mackay will finish the job.

“I’m expecting Cardiff to win against Wednesday. I had a spell on loan at Hillsborough earlier this season, but I was played out of position and didn’t enjoy it.

“It’s Cardiff’s time. They are, for me, going up.”

Bothroyd has scored three goals in his last four QPR appearances and is in their squad to face Aston Villa in a crucial relegation clash tomorrow.

He tweeted about us saying he wants up.

Depsite people will go on about his lazyness, sitting on the floor.. I will always thank Jay for his time here.

We made him into a better striker.

He had a great partnership with Chopra.. their link up play was unbelievable on times.

I weren't bothered he left.. he had a great season and he wanted to test hiself at the higher level.. Who can blame him for that?

He was unplayable on times in this divison.
