Cardiff City's trip to face Sheffield Wednesday is unlikely to be an open free-flowing affair with plenty of goals with both sides grinding out results rather than outplaying their opponents and scoring goals for fun.
Cardiff City are not playing well, but have the happy knack of winning ugly and salvaging draws from losing positions. The equalising headed goals from Craig Noone and Rudy Gestede in the last two games may prove crucial in the final standings and had we lost those games, three defeats in a row would have severely dented our confidence.
City have netted just 5 goals in their previous 5 games, while that one goal a game statistic extends further 10 a ratio of 10 goals in 10 games. Thats not usual for a side that leads the Championship and remain on course for promotion. Taking aside the contribution of new signing Fraizer Campbell we would have just 5 in 10 with Kim, Smith, Gunnarsson, Noone and Gestede bagging a goal apiece. Worth noting there that in 10 games, the only strikers to score are Campbell (5) and Gestede's header in a brief cameo appearance.
Similarly, Sheffield Wednesday have struggled for goals and in beating Leicester last weekend they netted their 4th goal in 5 games. The Owls have 11 in 10 games going back further, helped by a 3-1 home win over Brighton. We were defeated 2-0 by the Seagulls recently and rarely looked like scoring in that game.
Cardiff City's form is built mostly on defensive solidity, so the newws that Mark Hudson and Ben Turner are ruled out is worrying. Now would be a very good time to rediscover our attacking edge. The likes of Campbell, Bellamy, Smith, Whittingham carry a significant goal threat but have been blunted in recent weeks with Whittingham nullified and a lack of quality possession going forwards. For quite some time now you felt an early goal might set the tone for a resounding CCFC victory..... now would be a great time to start!
