Leon Set To Play Against Sheffield Wednesday

Thu Mar 14, 2013 10:37 pm

CARDIFF City have signed Premier League defender Leon Barnett to strengthen their chase for promotion.

Norwich City centre-back Barnett is set to go straight into the team to face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday providing paperwork can be completed.

He will wear number 25 and remain with the squad until after the clash with Nottingham Forest on April 13

Skipper Mark Hudson and Ben Turner will miss the match at Sheffield Wednesday because of ankle injuries and Barnett looks an ideal player to step in.

The former West Brom and Coventry man has made eight Premier League appearances for Norwich this season, while he helped the Canaries earn promotion to the Premier League in 2011.

Speaking of the new arrival, Malky Mackay said: “Leon is an experienced defender and will add quality to our ranks over the coming weeks.

"He’s quick, aggressive and a combative player – an excellent professional who has been involved in promotion pushes and is a good lad too.

"I’ve no doubt he’ll fit in very well with the squad and I would like to thank Chris Hughton and Norwich City for their help in bringing Leon in, it’s very much appreciated.”

Barnett, 27, hasn’t played since the end of January but will join Matt Connolly at the centre of Cardiff’s back four with Kevin McNaughton and Andrew Taylor in the full-back slots.

The Bluebirds have been top of the Championship for almost two months and have 10 matches to keep their position there and clinch promotion.

City have won 22 of their 36 Championship matches this season and had only one defeat in their last 10 away games.

They have not been at their best recently, but are still clear leaders and have been out in front since November 24 when they defeated Barnsley.

The arrival of Barnett is a massive boost to Mackay’s men.

He is highly versatile and can play anywhere across the back four or as a holding player in midfield.

On Saturday, at Hillsborough, manager Mackay goes head-to-head with the man who tried and failed to take the Bluebirds up to the Premier League.

Unless of course you're talking about a pre season friendly with the World's oldest football club http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_F.C.

Cardiff City have signed defender Leon Barnett on loan from Norwich.

Barnett, 27, arrives after captain Mark Hudson's recent ankle injuries and will be at Cardiff until Saturday, 13 April, when they host Nottingham Forest.

Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay hopes formalities are completed in time for Barnett to be available to face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

"He's quick, aggressive and a combative player - an excellent professional," said Mackay.

Barnett has made eight Premier League appearances for Norwich this season, the last of them on 8 December when they won 4-3 at Swansea City.

He has also made three FA Cup appearances.

Mackay added: "I've no doubt he'll fit in very well with the squad and I would like to thank [manager] Chris Hughton and Norwich City for their help in bringing Leon in.

"It's very much appreciated."

Barnett has previously played for West Bromwich Albion, Coventry City and had a loan spell at the Canaries in August, 2010.

He then became a permanent player at Norwich in December, 2010.
