CardiffCity have tonight brought in #NCFC defender Leon Barnett on loan and views from Malky Mackay

' CARDIFF CITY SIGN LEON BARNETT ON LOAN '

PUBLISHED
22:00 14th March 2013

Cardiff City can this evening confirm the loan capture of Norwich City defender Leon Barnett.

Leon will join the squad to train on Friday morning and will remain at the club until the completion of the Nottingham Forest game on Saturday April 13th. If paperwork is completed in time he will be available for selection for the Hillsborough away trip as Cardiff City play Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. He will take squad number 25.

Speaking of the new arrival, Malky Mackay tonight said, “Leon is an experienced defender and will add quality to our ranks over the coming weeks. He’s quick, aggressive and a combative player – an excellent professional who has been involved in promotion pushes and is a good lad too. I’ve no doubt he’ll fit in very well with the squad and I would like to thank Chris Hughton and Norwich City for their help in bringing Leon in, it’s very much appreciated.”

Facts: 27 year old Leon began his career via the Academy at Luton Town in 2002. In 2007 he made the move to West Bromwich Albion while the Baggies were in the Championship, helping his new club gain promotion to the Premier League in his first season. Reward for this came via a new deal at the Hawthorns.

In 2009 Leon joined Coventry City on loan and made another loan move to Norwich City in August 2010; the move being made permanent in December the same year, with Leon a part of the squad that went on to win promotion to the top flight. This season he has so far made eleven appearances in the Premier League.

Don't know much about him but he's clearly got something about him to get promoted twice.

Should be a good signing :ayatollah:

From what I have seen, Leon Barnett is a pacey defender, but he is short for a centre back and shouldn't be expected to dominate in the air. I remember one of our goals at home to Norwich, a Marshall kick, Bothroyd effortlessly beating Barnett in the air to flick it on and Chopra running through to take it around the keeper and score. But with Hudson, Turner and Nugent not being te quickest, Barnett could work very well with them with his pace. Apart from the fact I know he's pacey and not the tallest, I haven't really seen enough of him to judge. But I'm sure Barnett was an ever present for Norwich's promotion season, so I would like to think he can't be a bad signing at all.

Barnett played in his first Premier League game for Norwich as a substitute away at Wigan Athletic on 13 August 2011, replacing the injured Zak Whitbread. He started the next game, a 1–1 draw at home with Stoke City at Carrow Road, but was adjudged by referee Neil Swarbrick to have committed a professional foul on Jon Walters in the second half, conceding a penalty kick and receiving a red card.[15] On 26 September, Barnett scored his first Premier League goal in a 2–1 win against Sunderland.[16] It appears that he may not figure in manager Chris Hughton's future plans at Norwich City, after he was offered in trade for Birmingham City's Curtis Davies

Decent Championship defender.

Dave Jones tried to sign him in the summer for Wednesday.

He will do a job.

Just heard he's 6'1, so he's taller than I thought. Maybe he just looked short compared to Bothroyd. He's pacey, a good athlete and is definitely tall enough at 6'1. I'm pleasently surprised we have got him and I think he will do well for us. :ayatollah:

I think you are being a bit unjust on Lappin. He has played 2 games and was solid in both and was a good passer of the ball. He was harshly sent off in one game where the conditions were not that good and one of the bookings should not have happened. Not sure how you can judge a guy on two games.
